When I was growing up I had some friends and they were forbidden in their belief to go to the movies, which I thought was strange... My Dad a Baptist believer, deacon and church clerk was a sofa cowboy and him being from Texas one of his favorite programs on the TV was Gunsmoke and many other favorite Westerns and although it was acting as we all knew, those who didn't know it was might think it as real... So what about the ignorant who view this as a vice?... Even though it is deemed as entertainment, is it?... Or is it something else?... One can say well a Western is one thing and other types of entertainment is another?... Are gangsters on TV different than cowboys on TV killing one another?... I'm not the morality police and am not trying to be but where do we draw the line?... I'm sure none of us indulge in vices like bar hopping, nudie houses or those a sensual flavor and are law abiding Christians... I will never forget the comment of two brethren listening to a preacher giving an exhortation on the doctrine of Sovereign Grace as he said because of what the Lord has done for us our responsibility to him... What our brethren call duty preaching... One said to the other, he's gone from preaching and started meddling... And no I'm not meddling but what are vices?... And should we take this scripture to heart and although my wife and I did go to the movies and still attend church, should we heed the belief of my childhood friends and not go again?... Is it a vice?... Being in the world but not of the world... How much does this scripture apply?... Brother Glen:)

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Both TV and Movies can be used to produce both good and bad material!

I know that too but then again am I treading on sacred ground?... You are watching a movie that you enjoy... And you think it it is family entertainment... In the middle of the movie an explicative is used, say a simple one dam... Do you turn off the TV?... Walk out of the theatre?... What happens if it is on a TV sports program you are watching, there are some pretty colorful language on there... All I'm saying as a Christian... Where do you draw the line?... I didn't say go live in a cave somewhere and cut yourself off from the world, as some do, and join others that do the same... What do you allow and what do you not?... You can only control yourself, not someone else... What are the parameters that you set?... Like I've stated before I am asking a question, I'm not the morality police and I'm not here to judge anyone... Where personally do those on here draw the line?... Brother Glen:)

My old preacher mentioned that his favorite show was MASH. He later realized the degree of immorality the show promoted and removed the show from his life.

In the same sermon he indicated this was something every person needed to deal with for themselves - not to condemn the brethern but examine one's own life and decide what was appropriate and what was not.

Also have to go back what is being displayed, as a war movie will tend to show more violence and language then a musical!

I weigh the good vs the bad and see if the movie/TV show will result in Godly growth or not.

That said, there are some things in movies that the wife and I view as never acceptable. If it's a one-off then the one not tempted by it will fast forward through it. If the movie is rife with it we don't watch it:
-Naked women or men or scantily clad
-Women gossiping or throwing pity parties
-Gay/tranny ideology
-Movies/TV shows where the parents are showed as dumb (If our kids are watching it)

We check Common Sense movie reviews prior to selecting any movie to see if it has any of the above.

Some movies/shows that we endorse enthusiastically for growth:
-Andy Griffith Show
-Superbook
-Original Jungle Book
-Lord of the Rings
-Narnia

Some movies/shows that we watch with limits. Growth is possible if a small number of scenes are removed:
-Heartbreak ridge - Wife fast-forwards through the scene when the college students are rescued as there is a nekkid woman
-Outlaw Josey Wales - Wife fast-forwards through 1 scene with nudity with the Comanche traders
-Harry Potter - We view this as magical and not witchcraft. Voldemort's actions are more in line with witchcraft while Harry/Ron/Hermione are more in line with magic fighting witchcraft. The kids get this explained to them prior to the movie.

Shows/Movies that we decide not to watch as we don't find the story to do anything for Godly growth:
-House/Grey's Anatomy - Tried it, but there's way too much illicit relationships all over the place to be redeemable
-Anything on Netflix - Due to Cuties
-Fantastic Beasts (Harry Potter related) - They've chose to infuse gayness into it
-Any new Disney movies - Gayness/trannies and child sexualization

I love Superbook. I won't nothing to do with Harry Potter. I don't have a problem with nudity as long as it's not just straight up porn.I don't necessarily want my kids to see it, but I don't avoid it like the plague either.
I watch a lot of Gunsmoke, Married with Children, Andy Griffith, In the Heat of the Night, leave it to Beaver, and Street Outlaws.

What is Superbook?

I don't mind Harry Potter. It is after my time (I liked reading the Lord of the Rings...more my thing). But like Tolkien, Rowling didn't make Christian allegorical references obvious (at least at first, as Christian references became more obvious as her series developed). It just seemed geared for a younger audience (although perhaps not, as I was young when I read Tolkien).

Superbook is a Cartoon Bible adventure series produced by CBN. My kids loved it.

Thanks for the info.

Now. I do like VeggieTales.
My kids like V.T, but not nearly as good as Superbook.
At the time CBN began developing the new Superbook series, I was a major donor to CBN. My rep that regularly came to visit me, take family out to dinner, etc. kept my kids up to date on the project as it happened. We had a copy of "Roar" (the first one) months before it's release.
(There was a Superbook in the 70s, but it's very outdated)

Our TV Show preferences sound very similar. I'll swap out "Married with Children" for "Duck Dynasty" and "Street Outlaws" for "Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe" haha.

I've seen several "In the Heat of the Night" episodes. My favorite is when a large criminal bends down to pickup his gun that he dropped and the Archie Bunker actor who plays the Sheriffs tells his deputies "Would you look at that. Put another round in that big fat butt" :Roflmao:Roflmao

I watched all the "Dirty Jobs" and all the "Duck Dynasty" shows when they were first run. They just are not shows that I like to watch re runs of.
I saw that a new season of "Dirty Jobs" is supposed to come out soon.

Yeah, they started putting out several Episodes on Discovery+ (one of the few apps we have on the ROKU). It's pretty good. He focuses on the Blue Collar, family-run businesses and the common complaint with all of them is finding young people to work. I thought they were all pretty good.

There's an episode on a Jelly Ball fishing boat, an epoxy guy, simulated combat injury lab, and more.

I think you have asked a good question and although it may be controversial it should not be. I believe that scripture answers it clearly. The problem is do we really want to apply what scripture says or do we want to feed the lust of the flesh and eyes. 1 Corinthians 10:31 - Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

So based on scripture whatever we are doing if it is not glorifying the Lord, we should not be doing it.

Just an example. In my younger years I actually road a motorcycle. I also had leathers for protection to wear, but I made sure I did not pick black since I felt it sent a message of gang related and might bring question against the Lord. So, whatever we choose to do we need to take special care and ask is there potential to not glorify the Lord. If so, give it up. Also had anyone questioned my relationship with the Lord for riding a motorcycle I would have given it up.
