Yes and no.

It is not an issue of playing the games itself but it is a matter of the content of the video games, if you are self-controlled while playing them and if they take over your life or not. Addiction can play a big part in the gaming and thus become a sin.

I haven't much knowledge of video games, but I would imagine that the same answer would fit both your question and this one: "Is the reading of books a sin?"

Is the content of the book or video game sinful? If yes, then reading/playing it is sinful.

Are you spending so long reading books/playing video games that you are neglecting your duties as a Christian? If yes, then reading/playing is sinful.

Does playing video games a sin?

Sin is specifically spelled out in the Word. Asking another if some habit, life-style, hobby, etc., is sin, is not a good way to approach the matter. If you have doubts then give into the doubt. Take it up with the Lord and let Him tell you.

There are some believers who consider that having an occasional "drink" does not constitute sin. I happen to agree however, I don't take that occasional "drink" as I just don't need it and it would hurt my testimony. It would be unfair however for me to claim my brother is sinning. Who am I? If my brother got drunk..., then that's another matter.

Off the top of my head the playing of a video game would be much like playing the game of Sorry, or Monopoly. Becoming obsessed is another matter.

Jesus said that you just committed adultery in your heart even if you only look at a woman lustfully. With that in mind, these modern video games may allow you to steal, murder, commit war crimes, or a blue million other things in your heart. No it didn't affect anybody outside of your own mind, but Jesus didn't seem to care about that in Matthew 5:28.

Rom 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because [he eateth] not of faith: for whatsoever [is] not of faith is sin.

The principle is that anything we do and we are not absolutely sure it is of God then we are sinning because we are doubting. So if you have no doubt that God approves of playing video games then it is not sin.
