Vigorous Debates Helpful

I just wanted to say that I really appreciated several of you here who, though I have disagreed strongly with on some points, yet I have learned a lot as well. Vigorous debates - as long as they are mutually respectful - can be real helpful.

I know that by writing this I am setting myself up for someone to hold this against me. That is actually a good thing. I don't pretend to always have been the kind of person I am praising here but, by god's grace - sovereign, not prevenient  - that is who I want to be.

therein lies the rub.
but that is not to say there can be no vigorous debates.
there are some on here who can do the "mutual respect" thing.

LOL - I have to say that I HAVE learned a lot about debate here on Baptist Board. I DO think that the debates have in recent months/year become a bit more hostile and I'm not liking that but I've learned lots of great information - and just some methods on dealing with disagreeing with someone.

I'm now on another board that is all about horses and I've gotten into a number of debates in their "off topic" forum. Right now I'm debating with people about evolution and issues about God. I've learned to address one issue at a time, ask probing questions rather than getting defensive and to ask for their own definition of things to be sure we're arguing the same thing. For example, one girl says she's a Christian but in discussion, she doesn't believe in the Bible, isn't sure there is a God, doesn't believe that there was someone named Jesus who died for our sins - but she's a Christian. Interestingly, it was a pagan who jumped in and said something about that - that she sees so many Christians who are hypocrites and now she understands that not everyone who says they are a Christian really is. This "Christian" girl was offended because she is SURE she's a Christian - that she was even baptized. :BangHead: But I needed to find out if we were talking about the same thing - and it is clear we weren't. I've learned that skill here. :)

No can do. I was born in a foreign country. Hey, wait a minute .....

So is that going to be your platform? and do you plan on asking the Calif Gov to be your running mate

And, Ann, you should join a board that does not have heated discussion!
