We were once a nation of free people. That's rapidly falling away.

Joshua, I disagree with you. The only reason we are having our privacy taken away is because of a response to 09/11 and the government's refusal to profile.

So let me pose some questions for those of you who are all keen on these x-rays....

Suppose someone wears an ostomy appliance bag. Don't you think it will be embarrassing for that person?

Suppose a woman wears a prosthetic breast or breasts (because of a mastectomy or a double mastectomy) or has silicone implants? Don't you think it will cause embarassment for her?

Suppose a person has prosthetic hip joints or knees, don't you think it would be embarrassing for him or her?

What is going on here is very invasive, not only concerning modesty issues, but also about medical privacy, as well.

It's not an issue of if we don't like it, drive or take the bus. It's an issue of Americans having their rights to privacy taken away because of the government's refusal to address the terrorist problem sufficiently because of political correctness.

Yet, this same government who wants to invade my privacy rights thinks nothing of letting our ports be guarded by muslims, whose religion says to kill all of us infidels. America as I once knew it is forever gone. I don't like the New World Order.

 

It's fine that you disagree with me. I didn't post out of disrespect for you, only to post my opinion as I see it. Americans have become whiney, and this is only the latest thing that causes people to whimper. I just don't see it the way you do.

Just for the record, I didn't say I "was keen" on it, just said that I saw the purpose and method in it. I'm just as modest as the next person.

I wouldn't know, not having any of those things. I do know that my grandmother had to go through the last few years of her life with one breast. The prosthetic that she wore (forgive me) was quite a bit firmer than her natural breast, and it wasn't apparantly something she could get fixed easily. It was quite obvious when you looked at her that soemthing was not right, but her opinion was that it was either that or take both. To her mind, I'm sure, this latest x-ray technology would be something that came with having those things.

See, I just don't see it that way. But again, I mean no disrespect. I feel quite a bit safer, and in some ways appreciate the job that these people are doing day in and day out to make sure that we're safer.

I don't know, I picture a pretty woman being told to be patient because the machine is malfunctioning. In the mean time, all the guys will be crowded in the little booth. These are not doctors we hired to screen and being a doctor does not excluse one from being a pervert.

I like Pipedude suggestions of having the person viewing the images remotely but I think it should be a last effort and only after a person has failed the other screenings should they be subjected to something like this. If they are acceptable in the Airport then we'll see them in government buildings etc... With the internet in full swing, this could be a very popular job with sites specializing in images of popular people.

 

I think it will stop a lot of bragging by men, if it don't do anything else. The truth will be out for all to see. :laugh: :laugh: :thumbs:

Cute, but you missed the "or" - the choice given was "privacy... OR terrorists" (emphasis added). I prefer privacy over terrorists. Really, no contest.

 

If my vote mattered, I would vote for privacy as well. Those folks in the District of Criminals, Fort Mead and Langley are far more disconcerting than the Muslim boogey men.

Alright, let's protect privacy and have no security personnel, no metal detectors, no air marshals. Let's forbid police officers from ever conducting license checks, exept where the driver has committed an offense and the officer has gone to a judge to get a warrant to look at the license. Let's disband the border patrol and let anyone from anywhere enter our country with bags, cases and trunks of any size or shape. Privacy... anyone-- everyone-- must have it absolutely without question.

 

It's the usual fallback position: "If you force us to obey the Constitution, we might as well just give up and let the terrorists rule us."

But if we don't force the governent to obey the Constitution, the terrorists are ruling us.

Common sense should rule. Exposing people like this is not common sense, nor will it protect us.

 

Yeah, you could go the absurd route (the other side being no court-ordered warrants ever & have strip searches at any officer's whim) or simply stick with the 4th Amendment against unreasonable searches.

 

Oh, wait, they already do. Yes, we might as well disband the border patrol since they are understaffed to do the job right. And, oh yes, I might not have a problem with screening my private body if all else was being done in a first line of defense such as profiling, screening all cargo that enters the country, all cargo on planes, etc. There is probably a nuke sitting in a Wal-Mart cargo container from China in the USA heartland as we speak, just waiting to be detonated. Let's say, it wouldn't surprise me, any way.

BTW, is anybody else sick of the words "war on terror" besides me? Especially since it means nothing.

 

Amen to that. Yes, the phrase gets old, very old, especially coming out of the same mouths in Washington day after day. Remember when we were growing, with LBJ, war on drugs, war on poverty. Guess what, 40 years later, still here. War on abstract ideas does not work very well.
