The only good thing with the Walmart layoffs is that the employees are used to living on substandard wages, so unemployment may be a step up in some ways!

I know I'd like to hear an answer, and it isn't Bush; he's been gone for more than seven years. S it can only be the man sitting in the White House at this time!

This is interesting - many like to say how Wal-mart is raking in the $$$. Apparently these stores are loosing money. Would be interesting to see how many of those stores are in States/Commonwealths that have raised minimum wage.

The only good thing with the Walmart layoffs is that the employees are used to living on substandard wages, so unemployment may be a step up in some ways!

Only problem is that unemployment is based on your current wages.

I'm not too sure about that - wouldn't surprise me if the libs came up with something to blame it on Bush.

So can we assume that while the stock market hadn't been tanking and those 154 stores have been open during the current Presidential administration, you thought that the President had done a great job the last 7 years?

The jobs numbers are a farce. The ignore those who cannot find work and are no longer on unemployment which si significant. Further those who have gone back to work are earning far less than they used too. So the average earnings are weak which has led to the eventually lay offs of retailers like Walmart.

Here in LA, several of the stores are smack dab in the middle of predominantly black neighborhoods, as well as other low income areas. The news reflected the discontent of residents living in those areas. Now they will have to drive further to shop and get prescriptions filled.

As for the wage increase fallout .... in my neck of the woods, two name brand restaurants closed their doors right before Christmas, blaming the economy and the higher wages cutting into sales and profits. One was Mimi's the other was a Marie Calendars.

I think the wages so many minorities protested to see their employers pay them has only begun to come back and bite them. We will probably see many more businesses fold as higher minimum wages bite into their profits. We will also see layoffs creep up.

But in the words of this administration, "things are great!"

The DOW cannot be said to be tanking yet. It is still above the major bull support line. If it closes below 15,800 there will be cause to believe that we will be in a downward trend for the near term. More likely it will be a crab and move sideways. I expect the smart money to begin coming in next week and buying as there are cheap stock available now after this decline. However, time will tell as will the chart.

Yes they were, Zaac. The labor participation rate is the real number since it includes not only those who have given up looking for work, it also includes those who have their shiny new college degrees but can't find a job. Just my opinion.

Labor participation rate has been in decline since the mid 90's and largely reflects the retirement rate of baby boomers.

The labor participation rate has been in decline since 2000 and is largely affected by retiree's but by and large a number of other factors one of them being can't find work they once had.

An AIS system is not ideal for tracking cargo ships in the middle of the ocean. Luckily, AIS also uses satellite information to track ships. If true, this would be catastrophic for world trade. Even if it’s not true, shipping is still nearly dead in the water according to other indices. That Snopes report (here) was written by a writer named Kim LaCapria and, like Dan Evon, Kim never called us or even sent an email before declaring our story "False." Another example of Snopes shoddy workmanship.

In fact, had Kim bothered to reach out to us, we could have put her in touch with an eye-witness, who was actually inside the building where the shootings took place, who personally HEARD the argument about pork being served at the event, and how the soon-to-be-shooter yelled he was "tired of these insults to Islam" before storming out of the event, then coming back to shoot the place up.

Bear in mind that Kim's basis for declaring our story "false" was simply that "no other media outlet had reported this." Gee, that's some criteria she used!

With political correctness permeating the mass media, it is no secret that the mass media seeks to downplay the relationship to Islam of so much of today's terrorist violence. But to say our story was "false" because no other media outlet reported it, is a bit of a stretch.

We provide this rebuttal because folks in the past have relied on Snopes to get them the facts. We hope the two examples of their utterly shoddy reporting, outlined in this update, shows they are hardly reliable anymore.

About 7 hours ago, a writer named Dan Evon from the web site "Snopes.com" declared this story to be "false" and later accused this news web site of authoring "fake" stories. Snopes is wrong on both counts. (Their coverage here)

By their own admission in their report today, Snopes' representations about shipments traveling via sea, is based upon their information for January 12. Our story was published on January 8 and dealt with ocean-going freight, on January 7 and 8.

Further, our article dealt solely with the "north Atlantic" not the Pacific or the Mediterranean or any other ocean. So whatever information Snopes has from the 12th -- and from OTHER OCEANS -- has no bearing whatsoever on whether our story from January 8 was accurate! We stand-by our story.

Had Dan Evon bothered to telephone us or even send an e-mail, we could have provided him with the necessary information to support the factual basis of our story. He neither called nor e-mailed. He simply decided himself that the story was "false" and used the Snopes web site to say so. Great journalistic integrity and due-diligence there, Dan. /sarcasm

The ports will not hold all the ships and the areas they park ships waiting to go into port are not large enough to park all the ships. Actually the closures are mostly confined to "express" stores (a Walmart experiment gone awry) and stores running in the red.

So its all about greater profits in 2016 not that they are in any kind of financial trouble.
