Yes, and the war hawks were typically from the frontiers where land was the big draw. Somebody mentioned New England states threatening to secede rather than supporting the war - it is ironic since the stated purpose was to protect sailors from impresment which would certainly affect NE more than the frontier states.

The British hoped to keep an Indian buffer between their possessions and the colonies - probably the greatest impact was the end of British alliance with the Indians which allowed the eventual virtual extermination of those Indians by American expansion. It isn't pretty but that's the long and the short of it.
