I was a smoker before I was born-again. Even though I was attending the church. Sometimes, I had a cigarette in my pocket while I was attending the sermon. Of course I didn't smoke inside the church. But after I came out of there, I hid myself and the first thing I did was to find a place to smoke. But after I was born-again, smoking lasted only about 2 months and then stopped it because 1Cor 6:19 challenged me very much, and found smoking is the sin committed to the body as well and the body would be damaged thereby.
The most profitable job which I was offered for was the General Manager position of MPI group which means Maxwell House Coffee, Philip Moris, Impreial Whisky, and they offered extremely high salary and I told them I would consider such job only after I gave up my life. But God bless me with assurance that He will take care of my health as I have been mindful about the health of others.
Spurgeon stopped the smoking after he noticed the cigarette companies exploit his name. Spurgeon is a good believer, but made mistakes in the life after the salvation, I heard. This is why we need the sanctification, and the truth of church gathering helps the sanctification as well. For example, if I smoke now, I realize that I cannot participate in the Lord Supper on the coming sunday because it convicts me of my guilt. Therefore such truth helps me not to smoke. Also, since I was baptized I made up my mind to be faithful with the teachings. It sanctifies me too.
