Weight Discrimation?

Excellent topic, Salty!

I have battled excessive weight all my life. We know that excessive weight brings on many harmful conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and the list goes on. We know the bible says "gluttony" is a sin, and it is hard to argue eating more than needed is not "gluttony" or a close relative.

I remember going to a staff dinner at our Pastor's home, and listening to slim folks discuss the merits of diet and exercise while I sat there starring at my salad.

Then they discussed "fasting" which I could not do because my blood sugar control was below normal and I would have a hypoglycemic event if I went too long without eating.

Now, 30 years later, I am on medications that allow me to fast without my blood sugar going too low, and also has helped lower my weight, but I am still overweight.

Interesting about medications to fast - as I have the same situations.
My BMI is 37.5

Likewise, I have battle overweight for years. While I was in the Army - the "Pinch test" gave me an extra 20 pounds at Fort Hood. When I got to Alaska - they told me I was no longer at Ft Hood!

Whats amazing though - when I go to the State Fair the only game I play is "Guess your weight - they are always some 30-40 pounds under my actual weight.
I have won many prizes for My wife!

Bad.

This will eventually get you a team of fat, flabby firefighters, and EMTs to haul you out of a house. Good luck in NYC having a bunch of tubs of lard hauling out a patient down a narrow hallway in a stokes basket.

The bill of course says there's exceptions for jobs where it's a bona-fide requirement, but we all know that's a temporary stopping block and will soon be removed.

Remember when they said nobody is going to be forced to accept gay mirage? Yeah. Fat is going to be a nice, new protected class in DIE programs (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion).

Of course, my bottom line is that any business should be allowed to hire whomever they please - period!

I wish I was kidding when I say a neighboring department once had an immobile morbidly obese sick patient (~650lbs) in a back room of a mobile home with breathing difficulty. They couldn't extract the patient, so they improvised. They took their K12 saw and cut a big hole in the exterior wall and then used a forklift to lower the patient down. I wish I was kidding.

I once had to move a patient of similar weight when he was going through liver failure. The first time we loaded him in a stokes and slid him down the stairs. It took three departments to move him. The second time he had died and we were having to haul him out of the bedroom and down a narrow hallway with 800lb test rope.

Because of my improvement due to meds, my BMI is now 32:3. When I came out of boot camp I weighed about 135 lbs and looked great. So during my service period, I was as physically able to do my job as i could be, given my genes.

One of the virtues taught in scripture is "self control." I think gluttony demonstrates a lack of self control. I am sure all the slim people of world agree, that our being overweight indicates at least in part, a lack of self control. This hinders our ability to be an "up front" or "on stage" witness for Christ. We can still do it, but we would be more effective, IMO, if our weight was not excessive.

Proverbs 25:28 says we should have "control" over our human spirit. Thus we should not set our minds on fleshly desires, but on spiritual things.

In the New Testament, "egkrateia" (G1466) is translated as self control or temperance. But avoiding fleshly lusts, and setting our minds on spiritual things remains the idea. Doing what God wants and not what we may desire to satisfy our lusts is the idea.
As with humility, it does not come naturally, but it reflects Christ.

I notice the bill makes illegal “perceived or actual discrimination on height or weight.”

Now, please explain how “perceived” discrimination is going to be proven or ,more likely, disproven?

This will lead to more lawsuits and more businesses fleeing NY.

peace to you

When I played hockey I could legitimately lose six to eight pounds in one game. I've always been athletic and a member of either a hockey team or bicycle racing team or something like that where I've been forced to stay in shape. When I exercise a lot I eat more, and then when I take a break from exercising I tend to gain a little weight but it is easy for me to lose. it's nothing for me to lose 6 to 8 lb in a week still. I'm 61, 6 ft 1 in tall, and I float between 185 and 195 lb. I have struggled with a number of the deadly sins myself, but for some reason I have been able to maintain a healthy weight my whole life. And not because I keep it on my mind and eat right and listen to what people tell me.
To me it looks like smoking. Most of the people my age is smoke hate themselves for it and don't want to do it but yet can't stop. I can't imagine what it's like to struggle with your weight to the point where you feel bad about yourself. Unhealthy vices are heartbreaking. The good news is I struggle with plenty of other vices so I can't claim to be more saved here than anybody else.

Back to the subject of the OPI I think at least......

I guess we have to decide whether say an airplane rejecting a passenger due to their weight is discrimination or not. Most businesses claim they can reject customers due to any reason they want to.

I have to accept travel restrictions due to the stroke I had. I have no right or expectation to be accommodated by the airline due to my disability. The amenities are nice when I see them the doors that are easy to open, and things like that but I don't expect that they get me on the airplane and get me off when I'm done.

I'm still a total libertarian on business. You should be able to hire who you want with no explanation to anybody.
