It started several days ago. My wife and I have received numerous cards, calls, and emails expressing appreciation. We have even had a couple of visits.

Our 70+ year old ladies SS class gave us a beautiful fruit basket. Our college SS class gave us cup cakes, candy, balloons and a card. The ladies ministry honored us at a special dinner and gave us cards and gifts. One median-age SS class donated money for Bibles to Gideons International in our honor. Two couples got together and took us out last night to a steak dinner and a movie ("Facing the Giants"). In two weeks a group of golfers will take me out for a day of golf at a Robert Trent Jones course. This Sunday the pastor appreciation committee will "take over" the service. I am not sure what all they have planned. I do know they will show a video presentation that covers the years of my services as pastor, have some testimonials, and give me a plaque. After the service, a reception is planned that will also include a love offering.

I am blessed.

Sounds to me as if they're trying to force you into gluttony...

You know what.. I don't even think our church knows it is Pastor Appreciation Month.... and I don't care.

Something happened today that will beat anything.

We had our Harvest Day picnic, hayride, campfire, and sing along.

The youth did a skit to a Casting Crowns song, and after the skit, the Youth leader, speaking for the church, told everyone how much they appreciate me. And then gave me a glass cross.

Now it was not much, but it means the world to me... And it means even more since I really, really doubt they know it is pastor appreciation month.

That means they truly gave it to me out of true appreciation, and not because they feel obligated...
For that ... it is priceless.

One cheap glass cross = $3

One moment in the light of appreciation =

God bless you Brother.

I have a clay statue on my desk that my daughter made in 1st grade. It's lopsided, and you can tell she used her finger to make the hole in the top. The 1 is backwards also. But it's mine.

I remember her face when I told her she spelt Dad backwards. I said she put the wrong D in the front...

It happened today. The combonation appreciation/birthday dinner. Me, my family and about 145 of my closest friends had a pig pickin' after church. There was a birthday cake and many cards and gifts.

This is just the icing on the cake - every week they let me know I'm appreciated, and I am so thankful to be here. I still am overwhelmed that God has chosen to use me in His service. To Him be all glory and honor!

New quote of the week:

"Better to have a pig pickin' after church,
than a nit pickin' after business meeting."

Not at all! And let me say, there was more than one "pig" at lunch that day!
I've been at one of those churches, i'm with you on this.
I don't expect a pat on the back or any applause...and wouldn't want the latter; but a little encouragement is good for anyone and everyone.
I ,issed that morning service, so I do not know. sometims we have. sometime we haven't. Ot more depends on what else our church has going on, at the time. Likewise with the anniversary bit. We've also done that several times, but I do not believe we have done a bash necessarily each time. One time, recently, we gave a small token of a gift to four individuals- the 'sound man' and the 'music director' and his wife (whose wife happens to be the organist, as well;, and the pianist. As we are a country church, all the above serve freely, faithfully, and often very long hours, without a cent in return, including driving many miles to do this. They well deserved a hundred times what we gave them.

bobbyd, I chose your post to put in my two farthings worth. There is story about applause. I do not know if this anecdotal story is true, or not, but it is wryly humerous. I have heard that the Metropolitan Tabernacle had begun to show their appreciation by applause. Charles Haddon Spurgeon was the pastor, received a substantial amount of this appreciation, as his congregation thought he was an outstanding preacher and pastor. However, he was annoyed by this, as he thought it showed a lack of respect in 'the Lord's House', and he was not particularly wanting such accolades, in the first place. So he preached a sermon, that basically amounted to why they should not be applauding in a church meeting. His congregation was so impressed with his message, that they gave him a standing ovation.

Ed

P.S. I posted in this font so I could read it. My glasses are elsewhere at this time, and I like to read what I write, not being a good typist.

Gotta brag on my bunch...they blew me away!

They did a recognition time for us Sunday...they gave us a monetary gift (for me, about a week's pay's worth!), a "free Sunday away," (in addition to our normal vacation time), several certificates for free babysitting, yard work, and a catered dinner for 12, some gift cards, and a host of cards and letters.

Tonight, they are having a 7-hour prayer vigil--the sole purpose being to pray for the ministers here and their families. This is the best gift of all.
I was truly blessed by our folks here. Wow.

Well, see? There stands the problem!!

As long as the calf is still goin' --- Moooooooooo!!! Moooooooo! ---

Well ---- you know what the problem is!!!!

The problem is lyin' in the fact that the calf is still standin' --- and roamin' around --- and still eatin' grass --- and all that kind of stuff!!

The problem is----the Rib Eyes are still a part of HIM and are not inside of ME!!!!

But from the looks of things --- yes --- I can go ahead and put "Charcoal" down on my wife's grocery list!!!!!!

You will get so attached to the calf you won't be able to kill it. I hatched out a bunch of chickens once and they got on my head and arms and wasn't nothing but pets so I gave them all away.
