...As if Californians didn't already have enough to be concerned about, their governor is reportedly on the verge of signing yet another anti-family bill. Groups such as the Campaign for California Families and the Pasadena-based Christian Educators Association International are incensed that Gov. Gray Davis is expected to sign into law SB 71 -- legislation the groups say will abolish parents' rights to be asked before sex surveys can be given to one's child in a public school. Under current law, schools must have the written permission of parents before any sex tests, questionnaires, surveys, or examinations can be administered to children. Randy Thomasson of the Campaign for California Families (savecalifornia.com) says the legislation "allows any sex question imaginable to be asked of schoolchildren behind their parents' backs." He wonders if anything is sacred anymore. "How is it that written parental permission is required before a child can go on a field trip, but!
no parental permission will be required before children are led on sexual mind trips about losing their virginity, masturbation, homosexuality, and cross-dressing?" he asks. Materials used in the new system of "comprehensive sexual health education" established under the bill are required to promote the transsexual and homosexual agenda, says CEAI. The materials also dismiss the value of marriage by teaching "respect for committed relationships." Forrest Turpen of the Christian Educators Association International (ceai.org) says Davis, who is currently facing a recall election, is risking the wrath of parents and other pro-family voters. "This abomination is actually state-sponsored social engineering of sexual identity," Turpen says. SB 71 has now passed both the California State Senate and Assembly. Both pro-family groups believe that because of higher-profile political issues currently in the Golden State, Davis and his "accomplices" in the California legislature ! are hoping SB 71 will "slip under the radar" and go unnoticed by both
the media and voters.

Since the recall effort has begun, Gov Davis has signed several bills that would otherwise have been vetoed. His attitude has become increasingly cavalier, and I will be glad when the recall election is over and done with.

BTW - Why did you say "the land of fruits and nuts"? I don't see Texas listed anywhere in the post. This is taking place in California, not Texas.

Do you mean to offend every Christian from California that posts or reads the posts here on the B.B. with the derogatory way you repetitively refer to California?

There are a lot of good God fearing Christians in California. There are a lot of wholesome Christ honoring family values going on here too. You don't see it, because you don't live here, and because the news only prints or broadcasts things that are sensationalized and overly dramatic. This is not the whole picture, not even close.

In preference of your brothers and sisters in Christ who happen to be blooming where they are planted in California, How about refraining from the derrogatory remarks in the future? The meat of the subject isn't what I have a problem with, it's only the unnecessary name calling that I find objectionable.

I guess it is better to be called the land of fruits and nuts rather than be lukewarm.

But God saved the best for last. People had to come by faith to the west.

The bill is now signed.

The state is essentially bankrupt.

Our schools are among the worst in the nation.

The courts can't decide on whether or not to have the recall election as scheduled.

Both LA and SF are built on massively active earthquake zones and both need to import their water from long distances.

Sacramento, the state capital, is built on a flood plain.

We don't have enough water to sell cheaply to our farmers and ranchers, who feed us and a good part of the world as well, but boy, are our golf courses green!

We have farmed the slough area leading to the SF Bay so extensively that the land itself has dropped below sea level, and the river waters are held back only by antiquated levees.

But we have protected the spotted owl!

Smog now reaches the Tahoe skies, and the northern valley is approaching LA levels of nastiness for the air in the summer.

YUP, pure brains determine policy in this state.

Nuts have brains, right?

Won't talk about fruits...

Still, the one thing that can be said is that anyone with a backyard here in northern Calif. at least can raise a pretty decent amount of food for themselves if they so choose.

When we moved to Wyoming (and bought a home on the old Oregon Trail) my teenaged kids asked why Wyoming was one of the last states settled when 350,000 people went across the state decades earlier.

Why didn't SOMEBODY stay and settle here?

So I pointed out the window and said "Here is Wyoming. Dry. Desolate. Not fertile. High Mountains. You all know what Oregon and California look like. Wouldn't YOU go across this desolate land to get somewhere beautiful?"

Hi from up north,I don't know what would happen up here if you made the statement "the land of fruits and nuts" after the legislation we've had thrown on us!!!!!!!!!
Same sex marriages and the definition of the family expanded to accept them.Then they passed a law to make it a criminal offence to say its wrong.We cannot use the bible to oppose this in any way.
As someone growing up close to the border between Canada and the USA we always concidered ourselves about 20 yrs ahead of you guys on the march toward socialism,however I doubt it will take 20 yrs for this to come your way.
Thank God there are still many here are not willing to bow to this wickedness.

Well, I searched (for an hour) but I couldn't find any web-site that lists political party affiliation by state. I searched the CIA, the U.S. Government, various colleges, the U.S. census bureau...I basically kept searching until I got really tired of searching.

Would you mind linking to the web-site where you found the information that made you say that? Yes, there is a democratic governor in office now. He's pretty much single handedly taken our surplus and made it a multi billion dollar deficit, and that's the reason he's being recalled. (subjective, it hasn't been voted on yet whether or not he will be recalled, but I have hope)

I found stats for population, business, economy etc. But finding political party distribution is about as hard as finding religious background. (I don't believe that Baptist is protestant, but I think the U.S. census lumped Baptists in there anyway)

Well Donna, there are really no stats for how many Christians there are in California either. I don't believe Baptists are protestants as you probably know from other discussions. But the stats break up religion into Catholic/Protestant and Other. Protestant is about 20% over Catholic which surprised me.

But regarding the Fruits or nuts question (I know that your question was probably meant to be flippant and not serious...and that's okay...but anyway..regarding fruits and nuts...)

I know the comment Fruits and nuts was meant to imply that California has a lot of gay/lesbians and wierdo's...but actually California does produce more fruits and nuts to the world than any other state in America.

Not that this has anything to do with your question, but I found it interesting and thought maybe someone would find it interesting. Did you know that Calfirornia generates more money than any other state in America too? I would have thought it was Texas with their oil, but evidently that isn't factual.

If nothing else good has come of this topic, I learned a lot more about the possitive impact that this state has in the process of trying to defend the negative impact that people here have been throwing out there. Thanks guys. I learned something new. That's always a good thing.

It's even a better state to live in than I had previously thought. Cool.
