Western world can no longer rely on the United States for leadership

You guys should really be celebrating these statements by world leaders more. It sounds like just what you want. I'm glad I could bring joy to your day. This week will be remembered as the time the US freed itself from the shackles of paying for the worlds military and environmental burdens. A national holiday is in order.

Of course. Foreign aid never happened in the US until Obama came into power. He also set up that pesky NAFTA, formed the EU, fooled the western world to sign the Kyoto Accord. That sneaky Obama has been manipulating world politics since childhood. Before Obama, nobody was foolish enough to believe in global warming or give aid to poor countries or join in multinational wealth redistribution schemes or hand over sovereignty to multinational treaties. The whole world changed their value system because of Obama. The Bushes and republican presidents would never have allowed the global value system to change and allow these terrible things to happen. What happened to the good old days when everyone was isolationist and dictators were your golf buddies. We need to go back to those lost American values.

Foreign aid has been going on forever and we can't afford it any more, being that we are 20 trillion in debt. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA and global warming is the biggest crock to come along in these modern times. Sorry, but the Republican establishment is ever bit the guilty party as any of the Democrats. (Yes, I realize you are being facetious)

You got that right!

Australia, Germany, England and others have been leaders in how to handle domestic issues in the least sovereign way possible. It's about time we told all of them to jump in a lake.

This us silly. The smart Yanks will suffer no guilt for this.

While I probably disagree with you on your views they sound like a reasonable opinion on the matter.

My post was in response to the Rev's view that the whole western world's view changed suddenly necessitating isolationist actions by trump which can only be believed if you intentionally ignore or unintentionaly are ignorant of history.

Sorry, Gold Dragon. The America Firsters on the board see no reason it's in the United States' interest to be the leader of the free world. For 70 years the United States has benefited from its position. It is true that the United States has made horrible mistakes, such as Vietnam and the invasion of Iraq, the results of which we are still dealing with.

They don't know, or don't care, that American relations with Australia are due to the fact that the United States moved to defend Australia in World War II because the Brits couldn't guarantee protection of Australia from the Japanese because of the debacles in Singapore and other possessions. FDR couldn't send troops, but he sent MacArthur to prove his commitment. And, of course, Americans fought valiantly in New Guinea to thwart the Japanese advance alongside ANZAC troops. It is an often-ignored campaign. Especially for the people on this board.

Trump wants to give up American leadership, thereby ceding power, ultimately, to China, which will assume the mantle. The United States could forestall that for several decades, but Trump will advance it to perhaps his administration.

Let's see how Americans like playing second fiddle to China.

Jessie Ventura ?

Baloney. Did Thomas Jefferson study history or did he clobber the Barbary Pirates ?

And really. Second fiddle to China ? It is to laugh.

Not worried. Don't care. Europe will soon enough turn to us for help. They always do.

Since you ask. Jefferson, like all the founders, were students of history, especially Greece and Rome. You are so silly. China will have the largest economy in the world shortly and will expect its rightful place in the world. We've been through this before. What happened when Germany passed the UK as the predominant economic power in Europe? Bury your head in the and all you want, but it won't change reality.

China will lead no one anywhere.

But they can probably buy the misguided cowards of the EU. That's the only kind of "leadership" the EU understands.

It must be wonderful to live in an alternate reality. It's not cowardice to seek the best deal you can get. Or so I'm told by the president. Maybe the Russians will make a better offer.

Well, Trump spoiled their plans.

The Paris Accords main goal was to grow the Chinese economy while crippling that of the U.S. and to use U.S dollars to do it.

Now they'll have to find some other scam to help China. Might even have to use their own money to help China assume ownership of the EU. That's the knd of "leadership" the EU is looking for.

Not going to sweat it. I think Trump's actions will successfully limit terror, and create U.S. jobs. And when the rest of the world sees that it works, they will follow suit, and we will be a world leader again.

I do understand the perspective that the US may need to take a step back from that role and focus more internally. I don't see how isolationism and burning bridges with decades and centuries long allies will help with that.

My WWII perspective is largely Canadian and American but having lived in Australia this past decade has definitely opened my eyes to another front of WWII that I was less familiar with. Thanks for your insights on this aspect of the war.

Thomas Jefferson’s Library | Exhibitions - Library of Congress

Throughout his life, Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) collected books across a vast spectrum of topics and languages. Jefferson followed a modified version of an organizational system created by British philosopher Francis Bacon (1561–1626) to arrange the books in his library, then the largest private book collection in North America.

Divided into categories of Memory, Reason, and Imagination—which Jefferson translated to “History,” “Philosophy,” and “Fine Arts”—and further divided into forty-four “chapters,” the collection placed within Jefferson’s fingertips the span of his multifaceted interests. The books from Jefferson’s library are part of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress.
