Without free elections America can't maintain a democracy. The Russians have hacked our elections to elect their preferred leaders. This is a crime against the very existence of our country.

From what I've seen the Kremlin's goal wasn't to interfere with the elections enough to cause its candidate to win. Its goal was to blacken the idea of democracy sufficiently enough that the Russian people would see not see it as something to aspire to.

It is not naïve at all. Every dictatorship is concerned about the aspirations of its populace. A coup can become a real threat, if people aspire to a different type of government. The current government is well served whenever democracy looks chaotic.
