What are Cowboy Churches?

I am uneasy about churches which limit membership by things like nationality, employment, or similar. I can't think of any biblical justification for such a thing. There wasn't a church for fishermen, a church for tax-collectors, a church for tent-makers. Of course, in a part of the world were there are many cowboys, local churches may have more cowboys in their membership than similar churches where I live, where as far as I know, there are no cowboys.

As I said, these men and women in my area work the cattle auctions, other animal auctions, and rodeos all weekend - most weekends.

They CAN'T be in church on Sundays and want to fellowship with other believers. They found a local church that let's them meet on Tuesday nights and they have an ordained pastor. It's advertised as a cowboy church to let people who work as they do that there is an option to Sundays in which they cannot meet.

It's not a segregated membership. Anyone can attend although the majority are the cowboys and cowgirls. It's not a costume day. Jeans and hats are their daily wear.

Their only other option is to not attend church at all.

The only cowboy church I'm familiar with, enough to have visited a couple of times, is in my hometown in Arizona. It started as a church plant sponsored by my home church, and it's basically a place where the atmosphere is less formal, and it has a ministry and a schedule that fits with local ranchers and farmers, and a more acoustic music style. Those who accompany the worship include a guitarist, a violinist and someone playing the dobro, familiar choruses and songs, but different sound. The hat rack at the back holds 60 cowboy hats.

Every church has its own twist. There is no church that does not. Coming from that cowboy culture I can tell you that Cowboy churches are about having services that meet the local culture. There is no such things as a church with a benign culture. Every church has a specific culture in it. The Cowboy culture is a church that allows Ranchers to come in after they have spent all morning taking care of their livestock only to get done just in time to make it to church. Their boots and clothes are dirty and the likely smell of their livestock.

The preaching is most often gospel centered and spoken in a way they can relate to due to their culture. Jesus did the very same thing.

I seen some of these 'Cowboy' styled churches on FaceBook reel, never being to one. If they are sharing the gospel, good doctrines, its fine. Its great idea.
