Thanks, PastorSBC (& Mexdeaf & Dr. Bob). Great article! I love Criswell's little quote, "All originality and no plagiarism makes a dull preacher."

Plus a number of other things. I have been told that he was great with children and listening to those who had a conflict with him.

In a sense isn't it all plagiarism if we do not give glory to God? We cannot take any credit for any of God's word.

No we cannot take credit for the WORD but man does take credit for outlines, ideas, illustrations, poems, applications, etc. That is not stealing from God's glory.

For instance, I am preaching next Sunday on Rom 5:1-2. Exposition. So MY outline won't be original!! It will be taken from the text itself.

    I. In Christ, I now have PEACE
"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord, Jesus Christ"
    A. Peace thru the Past Action of Christ (Justified)
    B. Peace thru the Present Reality of Christ (Sancification)

II. In Christ, I now have GRACE
" . . through Whom we also have access by faith into this grace in which we stand"
    A. Access to Grace by Faith
    B. Standing in Grace by Faith

III. In Christ, I now have HOPE
" . . and we boast in hope of the glory of God"
    A. Cause for Exultation (boasting about God)
    B. Cause for Elevation (glorifying God)

Clever? Not really. Just outlining the Word. So it is NOT copywritten, nor would one have to say "This outline is not original and I give credit to Dr Bob . . "

The Word and exposition of it is basic. It is the "extra" stuff that we must be careful to cite quotations and sources and not "steal" ideas and claim them as our own.

I started a chronological series of the gospels a little over a year and a half ago, and we are now to the baptism of Jesus.

On Sunday evenings, we just finished a 9 week series on perishing. We may start the parables of Matthew 13 next.

    Concerning W.A. Criswell,

I have a book entitled "Standing on the Promises"
It is the life story of W.A. In that book it is mentioned that he did preach through the whole Bible expositionally. It did take 18-20 years.
I highly recommend that book. Especially to any young man called to preach. I had to chuckle when Criswell talked about being something of a quarter-time pastor. That was because he pastored 3 small churches in different directions down in TX.

Whether you think highly or not of Dr. Paige Patterson he is one of the best expository preachers I have ever heard. I attended SEBTS for a while during his tenure there as president.

He is a master pulpiteer. No notes. He just has the knack of making you feel like you were there whereever he is preaching from.

He did a series one time in chapel. A verse by verse exposition of Revelation. It was magnificant. He often ends his sermons with some of the most dramatic illustrations you'll ever hear. Especially when he tells a story about early church fathers.

One thing always stood out to me and that was Patterson's reverence for the text. He is a very, very good expositonal preacher.

    ShannonL,
Criswell and Jerry Vines both used notes later in their preaching ministries. They said they needed them because of memory failure. Vines in particular stated in a personal setting that he wished he had not made such a fuss over being without notes. Personally, I believe the issue is not whether you are "note-less" in the pulpit, but whether you are "note-free." I've seen men without notes make little eye contact with their listeners. I've seen men with full manuscripts look the people dead in the eye 95% of the time. That's the key!

no notes or notes makes absolutely no difference. Be yourself and use the gifts God has given you.

Notes or no notes it doesn't make a bit of difference to me. I was just mentioning the fact.
I've been preaching 13yrs. and I use notes at times other times I don't. Sometimes I've had outlines other times full manuscripts.
I agree TomVol eye contact is a big factor.

I gave my ministry over to preaching without notes over this summer. It has been the most rewarding thing that I have ever done.

    Barry W. Stone

O.K. now back to what you are currently preaching.

I started with extreme notes (6 to 8 pages). Almost word for word. As I have progressed, A little over a year of preaching as the pastor on a regular basis, I am down to an outline with main points, supporting passages noted, and perhaps some subpoints. Memory triggers.

Do any of you come to the stand without any foreknowledge of what will be your message that day and wait upon the Lord to revelate your mind and lead you to whatever He wants you to preach to the congregation. I have been doing it this way for 33 years and it works for me. I love to preach on the resurrection and Revelations.

Nope I do not ever do that.

I wait upon the Lord in my study and trust Him to lead me in the process of my study.

I do my studying at home while I meditate. I am sure you would be very surprised if you ever visited The Old Regular Baptist churches. We indeed are a "peculair people" for we all preach the way I explained above. You seem to be a very knowledgable person PastorSBC. May God Bless
