I hear you all about being exhausted after preaching 2 services on Sunday AM. Sunday afternoons are nap time :sleep: that is, until time to get ready to preach again on Sunday night.

I. Salvation (Romans 10:9-17)

A. A genuine faith (Romans 4:13-25)
B. An example of genuine faith
- (Job 2:9-10)
- (Luke 23:42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.)
- Story of Charles Templeton losing his faith over the evil in the world.
- A genuine faith stands the test of trials
C. Requires a public confession of our relationship with Christ
- (Romans 10:9-10)

II. Baptism (Romans 6:1-11)

A. Dual reference here
- Physical Baptism
- Baptism HG
B. Baptism symbolizes
- Death of sin or old man (v.4)
- This death unites us with Christ (v.5)
- Old man crucified with Christ (v.6)
1. So that we may be free from sin
2. Live with Christ
- Dying with Christ means living for God (vs. 10-11)
C. Is a public testimony of our relationship with Christ
- Baptism in the HG occurred in public (Acts 2)
- John the Baptist baptized in the river in public
- Jesus was baptized in public

III. The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-30)

A. The bread
- Must be unleavened
- (I Cor 5:5-8)
- Leaven symbolizes sin
- (Mat 16:6 Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.”)
- Unleavened bread symbolizes the perfection of Christ
B. The Juice
- Covenants were ratified by the blood of a sacrifice
- (Gen 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD; and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.)
- (Genesis 15: 9 So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.In the same manner Jesus was the very thing all those sacrifices symbolized)
- In the same way the New Covenant (salvation) was ratified by the blood of Jesus
- (Hebrews 13:11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp. 12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.)
C. Is a public testimony of Jesus Christ
- It is saying we identify with the broken body
- It is saying we identify with the shed blood
- It is saying we understand the gravity of His sacrifice (I Cor 11)

Conclusion:

A. Who should take part in church ordinances?
- Those who believe in and have faith in the finished word of Jesus on the cross
- Jesus had supper with His disciples who believed on Him
- Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about how to conduct themselves in these ordinances of the church
B. When should these ordinances of the church occur?
1. Baptism should be done as close to the realization of faith in our hearts as possible
- (Acts 8:27-39)
- It need only be done once in concert with salvation
2. The Lord’s Supper should be done regularly
- (“This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”)
- There is no set date or amount of time
3. Salvation need only be done once
- (Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,)

I was once again asked to teach our adult Sunday School class this last week and, according to a couple of the elder women in the class, the Lord blessed me to spend an hour preaching to them.

The Scripture was 1 Timothy 6.
I spent a good deal of the time warning the younger members (even though I was the youngest in the class in age, there are several younger in the walk than I am) about false doctrines and gospels, and how those doctrines can sound oh-so-close to the one we hold dear as to lead astray even the very learned members. Covered a lot of ground on the prosperity gospel. I think it's safe to assume my church fully realizes just how much I despise the prosperity gospel now.

As I read these verses I couldn't help but think of some of the folks here at BB (and of myself from time to time):

3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Yesterday morning my pastor sort of slapped me on the knee and told me to get ready, then he got up, welcomed everyone, and said he was about to cut me loose.

I got up from the bench and ended up preaching using Psalms 62:1-8. It was about 11:40am when I got up. Next thing I knew it was 12:25pm. As soon as I "calmed down" I began to get tired. It was great, but also tiring.

I was asked to lead our Sunrise Service for Easter.

Scripture was marked in several places, Leviticus, the Gospels, and Revelation, as I felt led to preach on the choosing out of the Passover lamb, and the necessity of its blood, and the household use of it. I never even opened the scriptures. The Spirit blessed in recalling the verses to my mind.

I was told later that it was a very good service. The Spirit dwelt with us through that morning, our church breakfast, and then our regular service. God really blessed.

Good stuff guys. Our Associate Pastor did a great job preaching in our sunrise service from 1 Corinthians 15. I preached from Matthew in the other services.

Although, our later service was not well attended because many came to the sunrise and stayed for breakfast and the early service. But it was a good day.

That's real discipline in your preaching. Will you preach through all the minor prophets?

I love preaching thru a book. I always know what passage is next and don't have to fret about what subject is this week.

With that said, I too, do some topical sermons in between long book series, like when I got through Psalms on Wednesday nights after almost 4 years.

You sound like our senior pastor. He took 4 years for Genesis, if I remember correctly. Or was it 3 for Genesis and 4 for Revelation? It was a long time, that much I know!! LOL

Hubby just figured out his next series and he will be starting this week on James.

For those of you who have pastors who preach a "sermon series," I have a question:

What if something arises in the church that requires a sermon that is not in line with the series? Does the pastor break the series, or just continue on?

I'm curious. My church never does a "sermon series." The Pastor teaches through a book for our Wednesday night Bible study, but the Sunday sermons are not 'serialized.'
