I grew up in a GARBC church, in the military I joined a SBC. Over the years I have been a member of SBC, GARBC and IBF. For a few months, I was pastor of a Free Will Baptist church. I am currently associate pastor of a SBC. However, I was ordained in an Independent Baptist church.

PS

I think the test should have had more questions.

I scored 100% Particular Baptist, with Missionary and Southern Baptist right behind.

The term Missionary Baptist, of course, is a generic term to distinguish us from the Primitive Baptists, who are basically anti-missionary.

All Southern Baptists I know are Missionary Baptists. So are all Independent Baptists. I suspect Free-Will Baptists and General Baptists are as Missionary as everybody else.

As a general rule, Independent Baptist is a term that distinguishes them from "Convention" Baptists. Yet, all Convention Baptist churches I know of are also independent (as opposed to Big-I Independent Baptists.

Honestly, I never even gave thought to Baptists being anything other than Baptists. I'd never even heard of Calvinists, Reformed Baptists, Anabaptists, etc. Every Baptist church I've ever seen doesn't specify what type of Baptist they are. So, I started searching online and came across this quiz:

http://www.selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=kingdomparty

After taking it, the quiz says my beliefs fit into the Missionary Baptist beliefs. I've never even heard of Missionary Baptists before.

Do you have a specific denomination of Baptist that you identify with? If so, why and what make it different from any other denomination of Baptist?

As for me, I don't know if what I believe fits into a specific group of Baptist. I believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins and that you have to accept him as your personal Lord and Savior to go to heaven. I believe in one baptism (by immersion) for the remission of sins. I believe that the King James Version of the Bible is the closest thing we have to the books of the Bible as they were in their original languages and I prefer to use it but I don't bash other translations. I believe in singing old style hymns in churches and not the songs that you hear on Christian radio. I believe that churches need to be small and autonomous. I don't care for churches with more than about 150 people as it's too big for me then. I don't like fancy projector screens or a message filled with "feel good" stuff. I want a man as my pastor, not a woman. I want to hear the Word of God as it is, not watered down. I'm not a fan of children's church and prefer to have my daughter in the sanctuary with me to hear the preacher's message. I prefer choirs, pianos, and organs to "praise bands" and such. If there's a specific brand of Baptist that fits that, I guess that's me.

What about you?

My test came up as being a reformed baptist, but currently attend a Great lakes baptist church...

I am a follower of Christ, bought and saved by His shed blood, of whose sacrifice I acknowledge and have accepted Him to live forever in me. For what He has done and my acknowledgment thereof, I am saved. Praise God!

What kind of Baptist? I am but a Christian. Nothing else matters.

It sounds really good to say, "I'm just a Christian." But it tells me very little beyond the fact that you believe in Jesus. If I ask "what brand are you," and you tell me you are a Methodist, for instance, that instantly tells me something about your doctrine and practice.

If you tell me you are Church of Christ, I immediately know that you and I will disagree on the way of salvation.

At the same time, if you identify yourself as a Baptist, I know a lot about you. If I'm really curious, I'll ask which of the 40 different kinds of Baptist are you.

I'll want to know if you are Missionary Baptist or Primitive Baptist.
If Missionary Baptist, which kind? Southern, Independent, Fundamentalist?
Or are you Free Will or General? Northern Baptist? American Baptist? National Baptist? Regular Baptist? Old Regular Baptist? Landmark Baptist? Two-Seed-in-the-Spirit Predestinarian Baptist? Seventh Day Baptist?

There's no harm in wearing a label to tell folks about yourself.

Let's see. I'm Southern Baptist, Independent, somewhat Fundamentalist, Calvinistic, Landmark, Predestinarian and PreMillenial.

See how quickly you got me pegged. Just calling yourself Christian tells us comparatively little.

You left out Universal Church apologist.

You're just wanting to see if anybody is paying attention, aren't you?

If anybody wonders about that, go back and check my labels. That'll tell you if saturneptune is right or is just pulling your collective legs.

See how labels can speed things up.

Are you a "5 pointer", and what would you consider as being "partly FFundamentalist?

I am a five-pointer, and I don't know any Calvinist who isn't. There are some 3 and 4-pointers who try to hijack the label, but they're not fooling anybody.

Regarding the label Fundamentalist, I don't use it very much. It means different things to different people. For instance, to some, it means right-wing redneck, legalistic and narrow-minded. To others, it merely identifies on as adhering to the fundamentals of the faith. That's why I said "partly" fundamentalist. I like the second definition, I just don't like the first one. I prefer Conservative.
