Baloney; she equated them with acohol which is nonsense.

People who attempt to teach others the "Word" must be responsible too and not be impaired.

The thread is about what affects the brain. I mentioned a few very naturally occurring things. How was that a silly answer?

Personally, I KNOW that a glass of wine is absolutely nothing compared to a lack of sleep, too much pain, or the loss of a close loved one. In fact, a glass of wine is a help in each of these situations. It can help relax you so you can sleep quickly, it can help open up the blood vessels to warm an area of pain, and it has a slight sedative effect when going through trauma. Compared to a glass of wine, sleeping pills, pain pills, and Rx sedatives are violent. Much more dangerous, unknown side effects, and much stronger actions.

A glass of wine is God's gift to us. Not a barrel. Not the entire bottle. A glass -- 3-5 ounces.

The affect of one glass of wine on the brain is extremely minimal compared to the benefits in other areas. And much, much less than most medications.

You should never have equated them and they would never have been brought into this discussion. You were hunting for a way out.

Jesus told us we need the Physicians. How about a glass of wine when they saw your chest bone in two.

Now you are the one who is being silly. You are the one doing the reaching.

I have, by the way, been in enough pain after one surgery that morphine did not touch it. I woke from the pain and passed out from the pain for several days.

But that is not what we are talking about, is it? You are dragging so many red herrings across the path of this discussion it has become necessary to put on wading boots to get through and continue on track.

You moderation advocates have given no scripture to support drinking alcohol whatsoever. Every one you have claimed is proving you can drink has been shot down by the correct context in the Word of God.

I have yet to see proof that we can drink alcohol.

Again, you are the one who equated acohol with all the other things that affect the brain so don't blame me. If you need boots then wear them. You led this discussion away from acohol to the other red herrings, even salt.

Don't forget the damning effect, Helen. Drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.

I can think of several substances that effect the mind.

Kava Kava is one. I am curious as to what people think of that one.

Prescription pain killers are certainly up there too. Am I in sin to take a prescribed pain killer after an accident or operation?

Nyquil is 40% alcohol, I believe. That's just as much as a cough remedy described in another thread.

I don't mean to get off the OP, but does "Drunkeness" in the Bible refer only to the use of alcohol?

Never have read where the Apostles were sitting around an olive tree smoking pot in small amounts to help the blisters on their feet so they could go to sleep that night. But, who knows? I only read the Bible and never tried reading the stars.

My point (with the OP) is that there are lots of substances that effect the brain. I am hearing alcohol being forbid even for medicinal purposes, but what about other substances? There are many substances that have much greater effects that alcohol. Are they not forbidden because they are not mentioned? I think we would paint ourselves into a corner in which we do not wish to be.

Can you show us medical proof that wine helps open up the blood vessels to warm an area of pain??? Like say, from the New England Journal of Medicine or some official lookin' journal----nothin' from the Enquirer or Star!!!

And it is true that wine and other alcoholic beverages all have a sedative effect when going through trauma-----Nazi Germany's SS "Killing Squads" would "do their business" all day---and at the end of the day---drown out what they witnessed and took part in----with wine/whiskey/beer---ain't that gross??? Hiding the trauma of murder in a glass of wine???

I have yet to see verses condoning the consumption of alcohol.

"My Grace is suffecient to keep thee. No corner if we stick with the Bible. Lord said we need Physicians and I use them. Have too, had 2 open heart surgeries, double neck artery surgeries and double hernia surgery so there have been several time I have had to just "give it all up" and say "here I am", praying that it would be God's will I come back from the surgery room. It is really hard for a person, especially a very independant person to just say to his home, family, church and friends and ministry everything, maybe I be back but as of now I got to give it up.

Maybe a debate on those would be a good place to start. Last time I checked, the OP was about substances that effect the brain.

I believe those who drink in moderation have put up as many references in other threads as those who abstain.

I wouldn't assume that an unanswered question means anything other than the question is unanswered. I asked "what about Nyquil" on a few of the threads that were debating the use of alcohol and nobody ever addressed that.

I'm sorry. I thought it was common knowledge that alcohol relaxed the blood vessel walls. That is what the warm flush comes from.

Here are some references for you, not just on that, but on some other stuff as well:

    http://www.chemcases.com/alcohol/alc-10.htm

    http://www.tcminter.net/Artikel/Allohol.html

    http://www.stroke.org.uk/information/preventing_a_stroke/factsheets/alcohol_and.html

http://www.sciencenews.org/pages/sn_arc98/2_28_98/bob1.htm -- alcohol is the second subject treated here

There is a lot more on the net. I think these four articles give balanced material regarding alcohol. There is a lot more on the net, but this should give you some of what you were asking for.

Why not use a little fish oil instead and not have the side effects. Also, there are hundreds of things that have been proven to lessen heart attacks but if we took them all we would drop over dead. Why pick the one with acohol, why not, being a Christian, pick one of the non-acoholic things such as fish oil?

They keep trying and someone will come up with acohol helps strokes before its over. No doubt in my mind. You take acohol because they say it may help a little in heart desease but do you refrain from all the things which cause heart desease?

I thought it was common knowledge as well. I learned it in health class way back in high school. That's also part of the reason that people can die from exposure so easily when they're inebriated.

Nyquil, since it has alcohol content in it, is not for the Christian if he or she is serious about obeying the Word of God.

    Alcohol is forbidden.

Studies in the Word of God will show alcohol separates sinful man from a loving God. Sutdies show that alcohol mocks and decieves.

What kind of evidence would you accept? (Be very specific.)

    Specifically:

    (1) How explicit does it need to be?
    (2) Will you publicly commit to changing your position if I present evidence according to your specific guideline?
    (3) If I present the appropriate evidence, will you publicly promote use of alcohol in moderation for those who believe they are called to use it?
