"He created them in HIs image - male and female He created them". It says what it says. Case closed.

It does say what it says, but you are mis-interpreting it. Case closed.

They were created in His spiritual image. It has nothing to do with their being male or female.

The text doesn't say what you want it to say. It says what it says. It mentions nothing about the image being spiritual, as you would have it, but does mention the image being one of male and female.

One cannot take one verse and make a proof text from it when other verses show the verse shows something else.

John 4 states God is a spirit. That is the image of God... spirit. Neither male (Numbers 23:19), nor female (God is not referred to as she, her or mother).

God is not male and female, Matt. He is not a hermaphrodite.

In what way am I proof-texting and you not?

If God is just spirit, shame no-one told Jesus that...

[ETA - for Gen 1:27 to mean what you want it to, it would mean that God created Adam and Eve as purely spiritual beings. Clearly that's not the case.]

Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Jesus became man when He came to earth, Matt. He was not man before that.

You do have a hard time understanding the Scripture, don't you?

The Incarnation demonstrates that God is not exclusively spiritual. You seem to be propounding an heretical form of neo-docetism in denying this foundational Christian Truth. It seems that you are the one having the hard time understanding basic Christian doctrine and the plain words of Scripture

John chapter 1 states that the Word became flesh, not that He always was. When God sent His Son, God prepared Him a body (Hebrews 10).

If you rightly divide the Word of truth, you would not have such a difficult time interpreting it, Matt.

I repeat: for Gen 1:27 to mean what you want it to, it would mean that God created Adam and Eve as purely spiritual beings. Clearly that's not the case.

What has that to do with an exegesis of Gen 1:27?
Matt, why have you brought this thread back on this track, wildly off topic, having nothing to do with the OP?
To answer your question, however, it ought to be plain to the average reader that God is spirit. He has no physical form, no sex. To be made in the image and likeness of God has nothing to do with gender. God is not a physical being. It has to do with the attributes of God, many of which are expressed in the fruit of the Spirit in Gal.5:22,23

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

It has to do with being conformed to the image of Christ.

It has to do with man himself being a tri-partite being: body, soul and spirit.

It has to do with the fact that man was given the ability to think, reason, make moral decisions, which sets him apart from all animals.

In those ways man is made in the image and likeness of God. In those ways both man and women are able to strive to be more like God. There is not one aspect of anything sexual, anything feminine about God.

Now tell me: What feminine traits did Jesus Christ have?

LOL, DHK, you’re a moderator here on the BB right? Isn’t it YOUR job to keep this and other threads on track?

You ask Matt why “he” brought the thread “wildly off topic” and you turn around and ask him a question that doesn’t even have anything to do with the OP.

You are right. But this thread has run its course, and it is now 30 pages long and is time to be closed. Perhaps that is best solution. Then Matt can start his own thread.
