In 1992, Alexandre deMarenches, former head of French intelligence, described to his biographer how he arranged secret meetings between the Iranians and Reagan's campaign chief, William J. Casey. Israel's former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir also has endorsed the October Surprise allegations, which have implicated Shamir's predecessor, Menachem Begin.

    mmm ...

    Secret . . . fancy word.

"After 12 years of news reports looking into the alleged conspiracy, both houses of the US Congress held separate inquiries into the issue, and journalists from sources such as Newsweek and The New Republic looked into the charges. Both Congressional inquires, as well as the majority of investigative reports, found the evidence to be insufficient."

mmm ... seems like another conspiracy theory just caught fire . . .

    Want to watch it crash?

That's the point - the oil hasn't been protected well at all. That's why your argument is flawed.

About the time of the hostages, I spoke with a high ranking Iranian friend . . . it was his opinion that the regime did not want to cooperate with the CIA - ayatollah's officers blamed the CIA for at least 3 major coups in Iran . . . and there was bad blood between the two camps.

So after another failed CIA intervention in the desert . . . ya' want me to believe that ayatollah's people traded with CIA operatives . . . but, they would only negotiate with the clandestine double-agent secret conspiracy types?

    Sounds good.

I am not sure that I would believe any of it . . . but, it sounds good.

Apparently, the Iranian radicals holding the hostages knew about it. At least one hostage is convinced from the things his captors told him, that it was true.

That's why they held the hostages until Reagan was inagurated. Later, the quid pro quo from Reagan was military hardware and technology they needed.

And later used on us in the Persian Gulf.

Evidently, the Left still hasn't gotten over the fact that Ronald Reagan beat them silly in two
    elections.

Reagan was a whiz at winning elections. It was the governing part that was a problem.

I have to admit that I can't watch a clip of Reagan without feeling warm fuzzies. He had that kind of presence.

But he also did some things that gave us:

Debtor nation status for the first time in over a hundred years.
The largest tax increase in US history
The most corrupt administration in US history (judged by actual indictments, pardons nd guilty pleas of administraton officials for crimes in office)
The biggest debt (in constant dollars) until Dubya's administration.

On the other hand, he increased US optimism and pride.

A nice old guy, who was badly served by people he never should have trusted.

Let me add to your list, Galatian :):

    Largest tax cut in history.
Revived the economy to such a great extent that even the two terms of Bill Clinton reaped benefits from it.
    Rebuilt the U.S. military.
    Won the Cold War.

I had a small business. By the end of the Reagan years, my tax rates were higher. Some cut. He said it was a middle-class tax cut. But "middle-class" turned out to be $300,000 a year.

The economy was in the toilet when Clinton got in. And it didn't revive until the tax increases took hold.

Yeah, I remember the $400 toilet seats. I bet that scared the Russians. In fact, the major weapons systems that made the Reagan military were Carter-era ones. A-10, Abrams Tank, Apache helicopter. We just spent a huge amount on gegaws like $80 hammers.

Remember that rant by Zell Miller at the Republican convention about Kerry voting against weapons systems? Turns out it was Reagan guys like Cheney who did it.

Reagan was in hollywood, cheating on his wife and making inspirational films for the Army when the Cold War was won. Thank you General Marshal. Reagan's guys were smart enough to continue the Truman Doctrine, which eventually caused the Soviet Empire to fall apart from within.

We now know that the Soviets knew they were whipped by the time Nixon was president. They just managed to puff up their economic and military appearances for a few years.

Reagan won the cold war in the same sense that a rooster makes the sun rise.

Yeah, good stuff... "Honey, I forgot to duck."

To his surgeon, "I sure hope you're a republican."

Gotta love the guy. I just wish he hadn't messed up so badly in his choice of people.

Some of them did us damage we are still paying for.
