Well, dear me! what kind of Asian? Korean? Pakistani? Cambodian?

If the two people had backpacks, were holding a map and looking around bewildered, I'd assume they were tourists wanting directions. If they were holding hands, I'd assume they were a couple. If they had white beards and canes, if they were middle-age women, if they were school kids - I'd assume they were going to pass me by.

I'd worry a bit if they were gang-looking (tatoos, a certain street style), men between fifteen and twenty years old AND if they seemed to be stalking me - but their being Asian wouldn't enter into it much.

My first thought would be, "If these are more of Daisy's friends - run!"

You wouldn't necessarily<sp> know they were a part of any group. However, if they are carrying a Koran, or coming from a Mosque, then you could have a hint. Otherwise, you would have to treat them like any other person you meet.

Of course, some people treat ALL people with distrust until they know them...

In this example, you have a reason to distrust them to a degree, but only to the side of caution. You don't have to be prejudice, but cautious...

My thoughts would not be one of prejudice but of caution, given that example above. We have two small markets near my home in either direction, both are ran by someone that "looks" like they could be the ones to "stalk and kill" me.. I have over the last year shopped there many times and they both are friendily nice and just as American as anyone I know of.. If you saw them on the streets, from what you told me, you would probably cross the street. I think it's wrong to judge someone JUST because of what you think they MIGHT do without cause.

Sorry, in this, we will have to agree to disagree.. Maybe I am right, maybe I am wrong, who knows.. I just know that I will not change my life because of fear. That is not saying I won't and can't be cautious, but I won't let the world affect me in the way I treat people. I am a Southern boy and will always be a Southern boy. If I die, I hope to go home to my maker, and that ain't a bad trip to take at all...

Sorry, we will disagree on this one...

You're a long way from home.

But there are fine decent, Southern boys and there are the other kind that I'm scared of.

Helen: You got yourself into it this time, didn't you Gina? LOL....

Gina: It certainly looks that way. It wouldn't be the first time I did that on this board though, so I think everyone will just kinda sniff circles around me for a bit, maybe bat a paw at me a few times if I get too close or friendly in thread, but they'll let me back into the group eventually.

FSIH: No, but the Israeli Jews are considered ME's. So technically, yes, you are so totally right. I'm anti-semitic. GOOD THOT!

Daisy: That's agreed to a point. Situation by situation and surroundings are taken into account. On the other hand, the extremists seem to have no problem with the concept of sending children and women out either, so it rather broadens the racial/description profiling concept.

Jamie: How many of the terrorists on 9-11 were walking out of a mosque and carrying q'rans?!

And how am I being prejudiced rather than cautious?

I don't blame you for not letting this affect the way you treat people. I haven't treated anyone differently so far either. It's not as if I jump and scream when I see someone with dark skin or point and ask them to let me pat them down.

I simply can't agree to disagree on this one, because you have said I was prejudiced and tossing a group of people to the wind. That is not true. It might sound nice to agree to disagree, but to me that is like asking an innocent person to agree he was a murderer for the sake of peace. There's nothing noble about agreeing to disagree that I'm guilty of such a crime against God's created people.

I think this has been an interesting thread.

I think that I'd like to look at everyone and see what Jesus sees. I think I'm human and I might do a few double takes and quicken my step a time or two depending on where I am and who I see.

I think it's hard to ignore all of life's circumstances -- circumstances that are personal and those I see on the news and those I read about.

    Middle Eastern Types

    Good Evening All,
My family and I had the opportunity to live in a low income apartment complex for about a year, our nextdoor neighbors were Jordanian and most everyone else was Somolie (both groups, Jordanian and Somolie were Muslim). My experience with the Jordanians was most awesome. Their kids were well disciplined, academically superior to most of their American counterparts. The dad was a PhD candidate at The Ohio State University and the wife was a Masters candidate at the same. The dad didn't trust me at first (this was after 9/11) and would avoid me. However, the kids and the mom was very nice to us. Our kids played together and I didn't worry one iota when my boy with their kids. Back to the dad. After a while, I decided to try to break the ice. During the winter, since he parked next to me I would clear off his car of snow when I would do my own --- little things like that. It took a few weeks of concentrated effort, but I was finally able to talk to him and have some really great conversations. Did I speak to him about Christ? No. He knew I was a Christian and I wanted to establish with him that I was a "normal" human being that happened to be American and friendly --- laying foundations. This was an effort because it seems that American Christians link American patriotism and Christianity as one and the same and I wanted to get across that Christianity transcends nationalistic culture and is about the human being rather than having a flag attached to the cross. For the most part, my experience with Middle Eastern Muslims has been a good one --- their just regular people with aspirations and goals for themselves and their families, just like us. If you have the opportunity, give Syriana a watch ---I believe that it accurately portrays the frustrations of the Middle East from their perspective.

gt post n apprec the sharing! yes, i'm frequently surprised by the openness of those fr Muslim or Communist backgrounds. perhaps the Lord has allowed them to suffer enuff under certain regimes in prepping them for the gospel of grace. n i've been surprised by how willing they are to discuss the gospel when we finally broach the subject--sure, they'll have some objections concerning their Final Prophet n Al Qur'an, etc., but there's that willingness to discuss their faith openly (cf. the private nature of faith for many westerners). may that day come soon for u, n may the light of the gospel shine n bring conviction to ur neighbour.

    btw what/who is Syriana?

hmm, gotta wonder if we'll be considered Commies by some here for not being belligerent or suspicious against our Muslim neighbours.

never mind - why feed a troll.

I think experience makes us prejudiced both for and against people based on our interactions with others we consider similar.
