I know when many kids become spoiled, they get spanked. Many parents say that helps them.

Perhaps spanking the egg would help it not be spoiled anymore.

Spanking the egg won't help... well, I don't think it will.

But this got me thinking. Maybe we're supposed to throw out the spoiled kid! Just a thought.

Wish I'd thought about that a long time ago.

Not sure about that...but employing this logic, we should stop beating when the kid no longer floats...

Far more truth in this post, than most are giving you credit for!

For once a fertilized egg begins to have a chick develop inside, it will float, I believe.

One good quick check is to see if the egg feels smooth, as opposed to rough. If the egg feels very smooth and very slightly oily, the hen has been trying to "set" on the egg so it will hatch. This is one reason the floors of modern laying cages are sloped where the egg hopefullly rolls out through an opening into a collection area, just to prevent this from happening.

However, if a hen is ready to set, she sometimes can 'catch' the egg before is rolls away, she will 'pull' it back under her body, and hold it there, starting the incubation process with her body heat. She may well stand when laying the next egg, allowing it to roll on out of the cage, which sometimes happens, allowing a 'bad egg' to get mixed in among the 'good' ones.

Not just some folklore, we used to have many chickens, on our farm, and both my aunt and uncle, and another neighbor both produced a lot of chickens and eggs for sale, both having large "chicken houses", for that time.

I saw this on tv a few weeks ago and thought of this thread. If an egg floats, throw it out, it's rotten.
