Rom 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Act_3:19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,

believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about repentance? The demons believe. For me, I had to turn away from behavior that nearly resulted in the break-up of my marriage, using mind-altering substances, etc. My heart was changed. Scripture teaches that the gospel calls sinners to faith joined together with repentance (Acts 2:38; 17:30; 20:21; 2 Pet. 3:9). Repentance is a turning from sin (Acts 3:19; Luke 24:47) that is not something I accomplish on my own but God bestows that grace (Acts 11:18; 2 Tim. 2:25).

Unfortunately, there are many in Christian circles who believe that repentance is simply a synonym for faith and that no turning from sin is required for salvation.

There are verses that give a simple answer, like those quoted in earlier posts. Then there is the scene of the Final Judgment where the saved and unsaved are separated, the saved on the right and the damned on the left. Nowhere in the narrative of the final judgment is belief or faith mentioned. Rather it is the why the individuals treated those in their culture that is the determining factor.

Then the passage in James strongly says that simple belief without works is dead ... or the way to damnation.

The question in the OP is one that cannot be answered by a simple answer. To do so is to sell cheap grace and I fear we Baptist have been selling cheap grace all too often.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[a] works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?[c] 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”[d] And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Heresy!...................

So the Final Judgement in Matthew is heresy?

Where in this passage is belief mentioned?

So, as belief and/or faith is not mentioned, then a person's actions is the determining factor of being saved or not within this passage.

Note, I said in this passage.

Not at all, it is your erroneous interpretations that are. You do this consistently.

PROVERBS 28 [4] They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them. [7] Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. [9] HE THAT TURNETH AWAY HIS EAR FROM HEARING THE LAW, EVEN HIS PRAYER SHALL BE ABOMINATION. [13] He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. [18] WHOSO WALKETH UPRIGHTLY SHALL BE SAVED

Not a "simple" belief, but a "said" belief without works is dead. James says that if a man "say" he has faith and has not works can such a faith save him? God is final authority of his heart, but the warning is for this type of man to examine himself, as Paul put it, if he is really in the faith and if Jesus Christ is really inside him, born-again, then there will be good works that follow. The works play no part in the justification of the sinner, however, the works do justify the "said" faith. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. (It needs to be explained and kept in context)

You are saved to the kingdom, Zion, His holy mountain, the city....

Just follow directions

REV.22 [12] And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. [13] I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. [14] Blessed are they that DO HIS COMMANDMENTS, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may ENTER IN THROUGH THE GATES INTO THE CITY.

Thanks for an excellent post. I really appreciate your reply.

And your post shows how the passage in James ties in directly with the final judgment in Matthew. Belief, real, deep, life-changing belief is the key. Without a real life-changing faith there really is no belief, just an acknowledgement and that is asking for "cheap grace". God is not in the "cheap grace" business.

We Baptists and evangelicals, and fundamentalists have sold cheap grace far too long. We Baptist, evangelicals and fundamentalists are quite good at quoting Paul when is comes to our relationships with others, but seldom do I see Jesus quoted when relationships are being discussed. I realize this is a very unpopular view for many in the groups listed.

Micah 6:8

King James Version (KJV)

8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

to save us, God requires NOTHING, as all that is needed is faith/repentance, and he supplies those as gifts to those He has chosen in His beloved!
