What does the term “Spirit-filled” mean?

New Member

SPIRIT-FILLED means “filled with the Holy Spirit”, which is found only in these verses:
Luke 1:15, 1:41, 1:67, 4:1 … Acts 2:1-4, 4:8, 4:31, 9:17, 13:9 … Eph 5:18.

The Holy Spirit coming “upon” people always indicates the baptism with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:5-8
“… you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
… you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be witnesses to Me … to the end of the earth.”

Another example of the Holy Spirit coming “upon” for the baptism with the Holy Spirit:
Acts 11:15-16
“And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them (the Gentiles),
as upon us at the beginning. Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said,
‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ ”

The first occurrence of this Holy Spirit baptism is on the Day of Pentecost:
Acts 2:1-4
"When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

This experience is about being filled with the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in tongues.

Acts 19:5-6
"When they heard this, they were (water) baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke with tongues and prophesied."

3 things are mentioned here …
the laying on of hands, the Holy Spirit coming “upon” people, and speaking in tongues.

Acts 9:17
“And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said,
‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came,
has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ ”

The only thing mentioned here in association with being filled is the laying on of hands.

If we summarize the 5 passages, we can see how they are connected:

------------------------ Acts - Acts --- Acts - Acts -- Acts
------------------------ 1:5+ - 11:15+ - 2:1+ - 19:5+ - 9:17

baptism with Holy Spirit- Y ----- Y

Holy Spirit “upon” ------ Y ----- Y ----- Y ---- Y

filled with Holy Spirit ----------------- Y ------------ Y

speaking in tongues --------------------- Y ---- Y

laying on of hands ----------------------------- Y ----- Y

We see that being “Spirit-filled” has to do with the baptism with the Holy Spirit
where the Holy Spirit comes “upon” the person, who then speaks in tongues.
It has nothing to do with being born-again, where the Holy Spirit comes inside the person,
although many people have experienced both simultaneously (as they did at Pentecost).

Certainly it is true that at Pentecost there was a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Disciples received the Holy Spirit and power to raise the dead, heal the sick etc - in Matt 10. But in Acts 1 they are told to wait for the Holy Spirit and so for ten days in the upper room they are in one accord (no non-stop name-calling games going on there apparently).

And after that - the Holy Spirit is poured out -

In 1Cor 12 we are told that the Holy Spirit gives those special gifts to each person as HE chooses. We find this "do all speak in tongues?" and "do all prophesy"? - the answer in 1Cor 12 is no.

In 1Cor 14 "desire earnestly Spiritual gifts - but especially that you may prophesy".

According to 1Cor 14 - prophecy is for a sign to believers -- and tongues is a sign for unbelievers.

The real gift of tongues is very rare today. I don't know of many people living today that have it or who have even seen it.Not because does not want to give it to us - but because Acts 5 states the Spirit is given to "those who obey".

The same is true of the gift of prophecy. Very rare - I don't know of many people living today that have it or have seen it.

I know there is a lot of fake stuff out there - very popular today - but the real deal is extremely rare.

Roberto, I am not at all surprised that you have an excellent grasp of the Scriptures re: this general topic.

Tongues, prophecy, and the other 7 spiritual "power" gifts are NOT so rare at all in the USA.

If you trust my word at all ... I tell you that I've been around a lot of the genuine thing!
E.G. my pastor and his wife (combined) had all 9 of the spiritual gifts!
Plus, God has used me in this way here, and while evangelizing in eastern Europe.

They are NOT rare in the least in those parts of the world that are being evangelized.

You are absolutely correct, of course, that there is "a lot of fake stuff out there".

News Flash
This has been Satan's #1 priority ...
to destroy the usage, and credibility of, the Spirit baptism and the use of the 9 spiritual power gifts!
And since he is "the god/ruler of this world/age", the great deceiver and lair, etc.
'tis been a piece of cake for him to have considerable success ...
Nyama problema! (Bulgarian for "No problem!").

I describe this Holy Spirit baptism as an "anointing" ...
similar to the OT prophets receiving God's Spirit "upon" them when God required it.

IMO, no one has any of the 9 spiritual power gifts (1 Cor 12)
without first being baptized with the Holy Spirit.

IMO, none of the NT church leaders (Ephesians 4:11) were without this baptism.

This was the source of the power of the NT church, which was abandoned
by the big church organizations some time after the original apostles died off.

IMO, this was Satan's greatest triumph ... deceiving the church into
abandoning the Spirit baptism and the use of the 9 spiritual power gifts.
(And his second greatest triumph was the doctrine of OSAS.)

If a BAC desires this baptism, I suggest going the route of Matthew 7:7-11,
and don't forget the story of the persistent widow!

I believe this is a better summary chart of the 5 verses ...

Acts 1:5-8 ------ baptism -- upon
Acts 11:15-16 -- baptism -- upon
Acts 2:1-4 ----------------- upon -- filled -- tongues
Acts 19:5-6 ---------------- upon ---------- tongues -- laying on of hands
Acts 9:17 -------------------------- filled -------------- laying on of hands

I am all for the Baptist of the Holy Spirit and the 1Cor 12 list of spiritual gifts. Ephesians 4 says that these gifts remain valid until the 2nd coming.

But as we see in Acts 5 - rebellion against God - found in the church will separate it from the Holy Spirit who is "given to those who obey Him".

Bob

Awaken, it is really good to see that you have not given up on us entirely!

We haven't seen 100% eye-to-eye in the past, and I apologize if I ever offended you.

I don't feel quite the same towards those who have UNBELIEF in God's word,
but who prefer to believe and follow some false doctrines of men.

God's word is for all men and women for all time!
Even the parts about slave masters and slaves!

Brothers and sisters, do not allow Satan and
some deceived and/or phony church leaders in the past SPOIL it for you!

Your position is flawed seriously. For example, all the promises of the baptism in the Spirit in the gospel accounts prior to Pentecost are found in the future tense (Mt. 3:11; Acts 1:5) and yet people were filled with the Spirit within the gospel accounts long before Pentecost. Hence, they cannot be same.

Lu 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Lu 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

Lu 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Mt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water to repentance. but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Mr 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Lu 3:16 John answered, saying to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the lace of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

So prior to Pentecost there was no baptism in the Spirit but people were filled with the Spirit, thus they are not the same as you claim.

For you, all of my positions are flawed.

2 different time periods with different purposes, rules, etc.

The combo of Spirit baptism with the Spirit filling to over-flowing
concerns only the time of Pentecost and later.

Before Jesus, people were declared righteous under different rules.
After Jesus, IMO righteousness was found only in BACs.

Before Pentecost, a few people were filled with the Spirit (your first 3 verses).
At Pentecost and afterwards, many people were Spirit-filled via the Spirit baptism.

Your last 3 verses were John prophesying about the Messiah coming,
and explaining that He would be the One who Baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

Try it, you might like it.

What utter arrogance! Those who are filled with the Spirit are revealed by the "fruit" of the Spirit and arrogance is not among that list! It is among the fruits of the flesh.

2 different time periods with different purposes, rules, etc.

You must be kidding? Do you really think different "TIME" and or "rules" have anything to do with the meaning of "filled" and "baptism"?????? Tell me, do you baptize your water picture or "fill" it? Would the TIME and RULES change that meaning????? How rediculous!

The combo of Spirit baptism with the Spirit filling to over-flowing
concerns only the time of Pentecost and later.

The combo on Pentecost proves they are different just as they were different prior to Pentecost!

Before Jesus, people were declared righteous under different rules.
After Jesus, IMO righteousness was found only in BACs.

Oh yeah!!! So that is why Abraham is OUR EXAMPLE for imputed righteousness huh? He is the father of ALL who believe is he not? Different time, different rules?????? How utterly absurd!

Before Pentecost, a few people were filled with the Spirit (your first 3 verses).
At Pentecost and afterwards, many people were Spirit-filled via the Spirit baptism.

Oh yeah? Where is your evidence to prove that pure unwarranted assumption? Do you understand what it means to "walk" by faith? Every one listed in Hebrews 11 "walked" = "lived" by faith and faith is a fruit of the spirit not the flesh!

Do you really think that pre-pentecost human nature is diffferent than post-pentecost human nature???? Your view requires it so! There are only two possible conditions for a human being anytime anywhere in history - they either are "in the flesh" = "none of his" thus lost or "in the Spirit" = saved. It is impossible for any human being to please God "in the flesh" (Rom. 8:8) and it is equally impossible for any saved man to live or walk for God "in the flesh" as the only possible way to please God is to walk "in the Spirit."

The baptism in the Spirit has nothing to do with individual salvation or service but with the house of God. Do you know the difference between the "temple" of God in 1 Cor. 3:16 versus the "temple" of God in 1 Cor. 6:19?????? I don't think you have a clue! Go learn the difference and then come back and let's talk.

Would chapter 8 of Romans be relative to baptism of the Spirit rather than being filled with the Spirit. And maybe even Phil 3:21 also.

John the baptist was filled with Him from the Womg, yet no tongues or miracles, so?

same with Jeremiah....

Jesus gave the power to do those things to the 70, and to a greater extent his Apostles, so once John passed away, no more forthcoming to the church!

Can and does God still do miracles/healings/signs ands wonders today?

yes, but only in rare cases, and its HIM doing any of them, NOT any person gifted as the apsotles were to do such!

You MUST cease teaching Charasmatic chaos, as that theology is NOT of the Spirit, but of Antichrist!
