1Cor 14
23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;
25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.
26 What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
I can almost hear someone say "yes EACH one had a Revelation because WOMEN were not ALLOWED to go to church in those days!"
31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;
32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
33 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
“you can ALL prophesy” not “your MEN can all prophesy” and not “only men are allowed to read scripture so all you who read this can prophesy”. Rather it is “you can ALL prophesy”.
Prophets that have been given previous messages – are to take their turn relating what has already been spoken by God – and they are also “subject to the prophets” in that they must be tested “Sola scriptura” as was Paul in Acts 17:11.
I think what Paul really really meant to say was "hey STOP prophesying - because I am the one who is writing scripture.. It is WAYYYY tooo confusing for you to be exercising the spiritual gift of prophecy like me since I AM the one who is writing scripture - not you!".
Sometimes he just does not say it as clearly as he should.
In Christ,
