What if the SBC seminaries...

So if the SBC is re-branded, do you think that any of the 6 seminaries will change their name?

Only SBTS is not named after a region, so they would be the most likely. But what if the SBC changed its name to the Great Commission Baptist Convention or Evangelical Baptist Convention (what I want)... would a seminary change its name just so it could be THE Great Commission Baptist Theological Seminary or so on??? That would be funny.

I hope not. While the “Great Commission Baptist Convention” may define the reasons of the convention, it does not define a church or the theology/doctrine of a seminary. The Church is more than evangelism.

Of course, I actually do not know of very many Southern Baptist churches who have “Southern Baptist” in their official name. Perhaps seminaries will follow suit. Who knows. But for some reason, “The Great Commission Baptist Convention” is a little hard to say – I get tongue tied and would have to resort to abbreviations.

I really posed this just so I could quote Reid suggesting Southeastern Baptist Convention so we could be THE Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Nope.

The name change is moot. It's a ridiculous, non-binding decision that isn't going to catch on. I guess for a handful of church planters in NE it will help (a good thing) but for the vast majority of convention people don't care. They've always been SBC and always will be.

If the committee (I still can't believe we wasted money on this) came up with a good suggestion then it might have caused some change, but this is about as useful as a non-binding resolution on non-binding resolutions. It's a bad name, lacks creativity and thoughtfulness. But whatever, they can have their little party about it.

Actually, you are wrong. Southern has a teaching center in New York City, and has staffed it with top tier professors for over a decade. My wife used to book the travel for the profs to and from the center on a weekly basis.

On top of that, the North American Mission Board has made several northeastern cities target areas for impact ministries, Boston, Philadephia, New York, Pittsburg, and several others.

Further, we have a presence in Canada, just across the border, and I was on the very first SBC mission team to enter Newfoundland, where we now have two church starts in process as a result of our ethnographic work with the people there.

While I agree that the SBC presence is few and far between in the northeast, that is not because they have turned their backs on that area. It takes LOCAL involvement to further the cause. No entity can just press itself into an area.

If you desire an SBC congregation in your area the way to start is to contact the State Convention office in your area (there IS one!) and let them know that there are at least 6 interested families. They WILL figure out a way to capitalize on that information.

Then you can have your church home, and work it into existence the same way all new church homes are worked -- through prayer, evangelization, giving, ministry, fellowship, and discipleship. No magic formula to simply "plunk down" a church somewhere (unless one is Catholic).

Apparently the SBC overlooks the Lords requirement of gathering 2 or 3 individuals....and you want 6 families? LOL!! ....must have something to do with the business model of Return on investment. :tongue3: ..... I do have a number of families however but we are investing in our own independent church...... hopefully the ARBCA.

Get two or three indivuduals then... You have seemingly failed to do even that, my friend!

For the record, ALL SBC congregations are ALSO independent and autonomous. The only thing that makes one an SBC and another not an SBC is that they CHOOSE to cooperate together for a larger purpose, primarily funding missions activity.

Check the overall number of persons that you would be uniting with -- 16 million in over 44,000 churches with a world-wide presence (and the international field is growing faster than the state-side field!) or what?

BTW, my congregation voted and committed to establish a new congregation somewhere in our area, starting this year, in our business meeting yesterday. That is almost always where it starts, with a mother church. Now, we will be on the hunt for people whom God has called out and who are prepared to go the next step. Too bad you are not closer, I'd start with your group. I fully expect to find a group within 2-3 months and then we will begin the process of adding a new worshiping congregation.
