How does Onward Christian Soldiers have anything to do with aggression?

Alcott and Rhodes were confusing the demeanor of a musical style with the verbal content, and Sopranette was attempting to correct them.

You're taking the words of the song too literally. "Marching AS TO war..." "LIKE a mighty army..."

    I like it, too.

I guess Battle Hymn of the Republic would be out of the question....
    For aggression...

I'll fly away, is not somber enough...

Let's just sing depressing songs like "Where the roses never fade"

Quit nit-picking people and just praise God with whatever music you want...

    Ignore the naysayers...

The word is "solemn." And that's true, it isn't an hymn, it's a Gospel song. Gospel lite, that is, but a Gospel song none the less.

    Scripture?

And the question is, what is an hymn? This isn't about CCM.

    "Gospel song" isn't a term found in Scripture...maybe it's a...I dunno.....spiritual song? Hmmm?

EDIT: I'm not that fond of "I'll Fly Away."

That's not the reason I won't sing it. [IMG]

Words which denote violence and aggression should not be taken literally, but music styles which (to many people) imply an aggressive tendency should be taken as literal aggression? Ain't that logic?

That would depend on how you would interprete the style and sound of the song. I may not express the same feelings that you might.

    A song that praises God....

    How Great is our God...
My Savior My God... which is pg 333 in our hymnal
    Holy, Holy, Holy...

What about It is well with my Soul? Is it a hymn?
What if I add modern music to it, is it still a hymn?
This is what Aaron is getting at...

It is all about calling modern music styles evil with him...

Yes, some CCM will be considered hymns in a few yrs...
as soon as they make it into the hymnals at church...

Which really defines what the average person thinks is a hymn...

If it is in the hymnal.. it is a hymn...

I have already seen some of the older CCM in some hymnals...
So whether you like it or not Aaron.. some CCM are hymns according to music publishers...

BTW, the north won.... hehehehehe:laugh: :wavey:

Or if a hymn falls in the forest, but no one is there to hear it, do you still not sing the 3rd verse?

A hymn, or spiritual song, is a song sung to and/or for God. I could sing the "Star Spangled Banner" to God and it would be considered a hymn.

I often sing to God. My songs are not always one that has been written and performed by someone, but they are from my heart. They are also hymns. But so are they ones like "How Great Thou Art" (the old hymn) or "King of Glory" (by Third Day, if you don't know). They are sung to God as praise and adoration. That is the only requirement.

What is it with all the judging about what style or tempo a "spiritual" song must be? Christians in Africa use their native rhythms in their praise, and many sing classic hymns to new music written for it ("Grace Like Rain" comes to mind... a remake of "Amazing Grace" with an added chorus). None of this changes what the purpose of the song is, or Who its audience is.
