Obviously, there are a lot of factors that led ER to commit the crimes in question. But after reading the Christian Identity doctrinal statement, I think there is a deadly combination of error which lies at the root.

Daniel David mentioned one aspect of it--that being reconstructionism--the belief that we are to reconstruct the theocratic society of O.T. Israel in America. It presumes that only a Mosiac form of Law is ultimately legitimate, any legal deviance from that standard is insufficient justice.

The second aspect, also mentioned previously, is a belief in racial superiority. God never elevated one "race" above another. Only one small country (Israel)was ever priveledged by God with a unique place of blessing. That blessing culminated in the seed of Abraham (Jesus Christ). Now all in Christ are blessed by God, whatever their ethnicity.

The New Testament emphasizes both of these changes from O.T. times--changes that Christian Identity doctrine denies.

Surely, ER was an extremist in many ways. But basically, he did not understand the principles of the New Testament, and it's superiority to the O.T. I'd say that was his basic theological problem.
