What is Esoteric Christianity?

A long time friend and fellow pastor has just informed me that he is now into Esoteric teaching.

I would love your insight and views as to just exactly what this is? Has anyone heard of it? and can you believe in the Scripture and follow Jesus if you are now an esoteric?

Your input will help me to better understand where mark is coming from, and how reach him.

Esoteric teaching.
Might be Occult teaching. The occult is esoteric, teaches claimed not for everyone, understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.

Esoteric Christianity - Wikipedia

". . . have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. . . ." -- Ephesians 5:11-12.

There is a real phenomenon, where the lost, or former professing Christains do not know or correctly understand the genuine gospel of grace. ". . . if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: . . ." -- 2 Corinthians 4:3.

It seems to be that to me, but I thought some of you may have better insight on this which is why I sought you views. I didn't want to judge him wrongly.

I agree that it is more likely Gnosticism than not. Gnostics don't like to admit that they are Gnostics for some reason--maybe their bad reputation for being a fungus on Christianity and Judaism, that is, they are unable to exist apart from Christian or Jewish societies.

The term "FUNGUS on Christianity" is rich. I will keep that term for use in some of my future works. Thanks for sharing your awesome thoughts!

Oh, the term fungus is not mine but was used by the author of a section on Gnosticism in the online RCC encyclopedia New Advent. By the way, New Advent is a good source on Gnosticism as it was the church fathers who defeated Gnosticism. And it started as a Jewish cult.
