That we must be free in giving to them that need (v. 30): "Give to every man that asketh of thee, to every one that is a proper object of charity, that wants necessaries, which thou hast wherewithal to supply out of thy superfluities. Give to those that are not able to help themselves, to those that have not relations in a capacity to help them."

and remember in II Thes 3:10 "or even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat."

So is Scripture contradicting itself?

Give, but be discerning, give to their need. It doesn't say give cash to everyone who asks, as some of the above posts have mentioned.

If they need food, provide it. If they need shelter, provide it.
Be the good Samaratin and help those in need.

But don't encourage them in their destructive addictions.
Don't feed their depravities.

Give to encourage health in body mind and soul.

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.

And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.

And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back.

Which part of this says to kick them to the curb if you think they are taking advantage of your generosity? It never says that. Give to whoever asks. Lend and expect nothing in return. Don't fight back against evil people who are using you, just pray for them. If somebody sues you or makes you work, give them twice what they're asking for. There ain't no litmus test here. I'm sorry that you guys don't like the rules but I didn't make them up.

I don't give to panhandlers for two reasons

The first is that when we lived in New Jersey the local TV station did a story about a guy who panhandled on the Atlantic City Boardwalk At the end of the day they followed him to his new car and continued to follow him to his home in Moorestown NJ a very wealthy suburb of Philadelphia He was making ore money putting on dirty clothes and begging in an afternoon than I was in a week of hard work

The second is that years later I ended up managing a large regional supermarket and we always had panhandlers at the intersection outside the store I explained to the several ties that our store did on the spot interviews every Wednesday and that they'd probably be hired that day They wouldn't come in for an interview but continued to stand out front and beg

Now when we give it's only to charities and outreaches that require those seeking help to take some kind of responsibility for their recovery

I live next door to a large liturgical (non-gospel preaching woman priestess) and get occasional knock on the door, assumed I am the pastor. They will claim they need $$ for food for they are hungry.

Wife and I developed policy 30 years ago. We have a box of graham crackers and will offer the person one. Then leave them in the entry for a minute to "discuss" their need. Come back and see if they ate the cracker. 99% don't.

IF they are hungry and it is genuine, they will eat the cracker. If it is a scam and not because of hunger, we will not help. Just personal plan to try to distinguish real need from criminal scam.

But I have (in the past) offered assistance to just those types of individuals.
