“7. Despite production declines, there's still plenty of meat

According to a blog published by the USDA, "Currently, the outlook for domestic production of agricultural commodities, including cereals, meat and dairy is very good. We have sufficient quantities to not only feed our country but maintain robust exports ..." Any shortages consumers might encounter, says the agency, are likely due to a sudden increased retail demand for certain products, and supplies should normalize in time. The USDA also currently maintains an inventory of about 925 million pounds of beef, 662 million pounds of pork, and 491 million pounds of chicken, frozen in commercial and public storage.”

I don't want anyone to think that I am promoting veganism, but if hit with a serious meat shortage, I think that presently I could get by on beans and rice. Rice and dry beans will keep for a long time, and they are somewhat cheap, compared to meat. Rice with beans and a chunk of cornbread is a meal imho. Wash it all down with a glass of sweet tea.

I realize that a meat shortage is a serious problem, but we need to think of ways to face the problem and deal with it. I think my wife would starve if she were force to have beans and rice every day.

I heard a rumor, a rumor, a rumor, let’s be clear.....that you can’t buy a freezer right now. An edict to prevent hoarding would be the reasoning I assume. Anyone heard the same? Wouldn’t surprise me with everything else that has gone down, literally.
The guy that went on Tucker a couple of days ago, from Maine I believe, who said he was re opening his restaurant with safety measures in place.....got his license revoked. Guess he will now get ‘go fund me’ well, just like the salon owner in Texas. State Revokes Licenses After Hundreds Show Up To Support Maine Restaurant Defying Lockdown

Did you check the grocery stores a couple of weeks after this thing happened?

No dry goods. None.

No beans, No rice, no pasta. No flour. I think cornmeal was a little better.

I saw rice and pasta this morning although they have bought the grocery stores out again and I wasn't looking in the area of beans, flour, and cornmeal. This is just hoarding now. My friend at the store said that it started up again with the rumor of the meat shortage. It looks worse than it is because the grocery stores do not keep a lot of stock and worried people are buying up a lot of things. I have so much stuff that I am good for a couple of months although I don't even think that there is a problem anymore and I am not buying groceries so much as other things needed to run a home. The grocery store clerks are really tired of all of this. The hospitals have nothing to do so they are just making dance videos and they are not very good dancers. The curve is as flat as a pancake and if the cases go up again the empty hospitals can handle it this time.

On my weekly shopping trip to Walmart this morning I was able to easily obtain chicken breasts and salmon in the meat section. The area that was hit hard by the anti-social hoarders was the red meat section, which I have not purchased from in a long time.

Also, since the vast majority of shoppers were wearing a mask. I did so as well for the first time while shopping. I don’t think it is necessary in a county of 39,000 people with only 33 active cases, but if it makes the Nervous Nellies of the world happy I guess I can make do with the inconvenience for 30 minutes a week.
