I must tell you a rather amusing story about collection boxes. Years ago there were two collection boxes in the back of the church. One was for the church and the other for the vicar (Anglican Church).

A visiting vicar noticed the box and inserted a Guinea. After the serice, they counted the monies. In the vicar's box was a Guinea. Hm, said the vicar. Not much.

The verger (caretaker) repled: Vicar, had you put more into it, you would have got more out of it.

He meant more than the Guinea by that.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Helen, i am seeking more details. However, the info i have so far indicate some form of pastoral presence for staff and customers( but no preaching role of course) The "Fife free press" reports as follows:
" As well as providing an opportunity to give staff & customers a chance to talk over any worries or problems they may have in an informal setting, the chaplain will be provided with additional facilities should anyone want to discuss private matters"
The interesting thing is that they could have chosen to have a welfare officer, but taking the chaplaincy route appears to indicate a recognition of the importance of a spiritual input(though the company may not neccessarily identify with any one given church)
    yours, Jon

Helen, we have some small businesses here too, but none of them sell anything I want or can afford. One of them is a fancy dress shop, expensive baby clothes($15. for a pajamas that cost $3. elsewhere) they also rent tuxs, I have no need of any of those,a dn plus they discriminate by not having anything above a size large. Anotherone is a book store with used books, since the man is a pagan gay guy, it's very hard to find a good chritian book there. Two are resturants, with food not fit to eat, all greasy and fried, yuck. I don't eat greasy or fried food., theres a few beauty shops, which I don't use beauthy shops, theres a barber, I don't need one, and a few pharmacys, one of which I do use, all in all theres no where here to shop. One is a little business owned by a lady at church, she makes trophies and award plaques, I'd have to invent something to need her servies for. But when my son was awarded his high school jacket for excellence in grades for 3 yewards standing, we went to her shop and had his name sewn on, she doesn't do the work, she pays someone else too, and ships it too them. We have a southern states, which I buy my few dollars of flowers from each spring, just becasue they are right next to door. On the other hand my neighbor is the rest of the world, which is the people who work at wal mart too, like the lady who cuts my fabric, she is 70, her husband is retired, she amkes their money now, and they bought a fixer uper house a few years ago(around 10 I think i is), and they are still working on it, she depends on her job at wal mart to pay bills, and keep their home. I call this person to person, not corporate. Theres a girl whose husband left her, she supports herself. I know people at my wal mart, and I know I am doing unto others, so insuniate I am not. These same stories can be found at any wal mart those people equally depend on their jobs like anyone else does. I can't imagine anyone around here handing out products they paid for and letting people pay wherever they want. Not good business pratices to give stuff away, no wonder little business are struggling.

Our gas company doesn't give anything away, they hassled my mom when she wanted her gas turned on, it's owned by a company in Tx.

True for your wal mart maybe, not true at mine. Our wal mart gets involved witht hte community, they help raise money for community charities, and then meet the donation dollar for dollar.

Still, I refuse to criticize anyone on a tight budget for getting the best prices they can find.

Not true again, I feel as if you've said I don't follow what God ahs told us to do( do unto others), as if I should shop locally whether or not I need what they sell. As long as I waste the money God has given us, then who cares. We aren't all rich enough to choose to give higher prices for the the same items we can get cheaper. And if I were I wouldn't waste that way.

If little shops want my business they are going to have to stop marking up 150%(I know they do this as I've had family members work at some of these types of places in the next little town). They are going to have to have the products I want, I need fabrics, patterns, sewing supplies, crafting supplies, clothing for my family that is not only affordable, but doesn't shrink one or even two sizes the first time I wash it, that makes the clothing disposable, use it once throw it out.(Dollar store, and family dollar store never fail but to sell inferior products, all the clothes I ever bought there shrunk, and at that time I had only $30. - $50. to spend on clothing for my children for school, combined, my kids got cheated out of their school clothes, and wore rags for months). Of course the clothing store here sells jeans for $30. a pair.

Becasue you have the money to pay more for stuff does not make you better then anything else, as your post seems to assume. Someof us are just as good poor.

Maybe I should buy all my books from the pagan gay guy since they are in my town, no matter theres nothing there suitable to read.

I don't know if you all have them around you, but Good Will taint a bad place to shop and local Thrift Stores. I buy all kinds of things there, including of course clothes. I got my youngest daughter a Summer wardrobe for $20! Shoes included. Not to shabby.
Also never forgrt the GARAGE SALES! LOL
    Love in Christ Angie
P.S. The Christian Book Stores around here do a pretty good job of robbing us blind too. I am ashamed to say! [IMG]

When I edited a national magazine, we successfully got our magazine into Walmart, so I know a little about it from personal experience....

Walmart has enormous distribution and presence, so publishers do everything they can to get their materials into the stores. But there's limited shelf space for books and magazines, so Walmart sells the rights to stock that space to private concerns. A family in Tennessee "owns" distribution for books and magazines in Walmart's throughout the country. Our little magazine tried for several years to get into Walmart without success. Finally someone told us that we have to attract their attention with um.... a gift. The company I worked for provided some nice gifts as was able to get access into the stands at most Walmarts in the U.S.

It's a rotten way to do business and it's not unique (for instance, the music industry pays music consultants to get their music played on the radio), but that's the way the business works. It's no secret that organized crime latches onto the distribution and end-market portion of the business world.

The LDS Mormons probably paid tribute to the holders of the rights (or has an inside connection) and get their materials into the stores.

Helen, I'm sorry I need to shut up now.

Tyndale, I'm sorry yur topic got do far off. But I will look for those books there, they weren't there on Friday, but I'll be looking.

blackbird, your right, too many employees are asked to work in an area they know nothing about. Even the car guys, which irritates my husband to no end. Don't ever ask me which gun is which, all I know is pistol, shot gun, and riffle. Have no idea what those numbers mean. That was funny about the hulk hogan thing. Now I get it.

    swaimj, yahhh!!!!!!

yah, thats what I though too. Believe it or not, his siter, plays the organ at our church, been a member many years. Not sure what happened to him.

Angie, I shop good will all the time, and am always on the look out for any other second hand stores too. It can be hard to find the right sizes, and sometimes hard to find something not about wore out already, but I love them and go about once a month. And yard sales and gargare sales are my passion, can't stand to pass one up. I have even bought stuff from them and been able to resell on line(tupperware, and home interior), evidently it's not as plentiful everywhere used like it is here, and most people don't mind having it used, it just means they can afford it.

RSR.........thanks for the added info which was most helpful. It is true and sad that many out there in the world are too busy for "religion", but are they not the people we were commissioned to go out into the world to reach? If a door is opened at Asda/Walmart should we not use it to share the Good News?

Walmart is promoted by the Mormon church

Huh? This is news to me. I thought Sam Walton was a devout Baptist. Walmart's headquarters, as well as Mr. Walton's home, are in the eastern Arkansas region.

I don't know if Good Ole Sam was a devout baptist or not, but I do know he is dead. No matter what his beliefe he is no longer running the company and others will do as they see fit with little or no reguard to what Sam would have done.

I know this thread started out as Walmart and Mormons, but has anyone consider the wolf in sheep's clothing.

I too shop at walmart for things I can't get at Aldi's and the Dollar Store. But do you know that if you need to exchange something even if it is only a $1.00 they want your Drivers license if you don't have a receipt. And they promote child identification and support all the government programs and all those security cameras, in and out. Someone once said it was to report those who exercise Biblical training techniques.

One world order, one world system, one world shopping! [IMG]

Mr. Sam was a devout Baptist and he endowed a college in Missouri north of the little town of
Benton where he started his first local store and from it built an empire with the Lord's help.

I know of two southeast Texan's who got their college training there in Missouri. One is pastor of the thriving Crestview SBC in Lumberton, TX. and one is the grandchild of our emeritus and interim pastor who graduated from Baylor.

We have many friends who depend on WalMart for their paycheck and I have bought my most recent Bibles and "Left Behind" books from their book section. I am very happy with both my NKJ with the red cover, and my grandaughter's NKJ for Teens.

I haven't seen the Mormon literature yet!

I know Mr. Sam always bought American when American was available. They still put the flag on their American made merchandise.

The last time we drove through Eureka Springs, Ark., we stopped at the smoked meat place on the highway and the lady told us the current joke in Northern Arkansas. Here it is: "When Jesus comes again, here in Northern Arkansas will He have to shout "Attention all Wal Mart shoppers!?'"

My friend who is battling cancer has a sign near her garage doorbell that reads, "Gone to Wal Mart".

We started our school supply shopping at Dollar Store, but had to go to Wal Mart to find the needed items not carried by Dollar Store. When we arrived there, we found we had paid more for the notebook paper than the Wal Mart price.

Also, the Palmolive dishwashing liquid in Dollar Store that is 99c is not concentrated as is the more expensive bottle at Wal Mart. I have learned to look for the word 'concentrated' when I buy any dishwashing liquid.

But bottom line is, where are you going to find a 'Christian' department store?

We should pray for our Baptist people because we are the major recruits for Mormons and JWs.

    -----------------
Look up, our redemption draws nigh!

    Shalom, Alliswell [IMG]

There aren't any Mormon books at the Wal-Mart by my house...There are however a great deal of Christian books. Guess they market things where they will sell.

I shop at Wal-Mart because when I do price comparisons...the other stores are always more expensive...and sometimes by 50 to 100%.

I will buy where it's cheaper... I'm not a department store type person anymore... I can't afford to buy things at high prices...not for any reason.

Ok, you twisted my arm. I shopped at a Walmart store once.

A agree, however, that a lot of empty store fronts came on the scene when Walmart came in....and they are still empty. All the mom and pop shops where "everyone knows your name."

    Cheers,

    Jim

There aren't any Mom and Pop shops around my house...in fact there weren't any shops that didn't require my driving an hour round trip until Wal-Mart opened last year. Albertsons was worried that they wouldn't be able to stay in business...so they brought in Starbucks. Stater Bros. thought they would go out of business...so they brought in Krispy Kreme Donuts. I still shop at Albertsons for my groceries...But I'm not going to buy the same Tide Detergent I can get accross the street at Wal Mart for $12.00 for $25.00 at Albertsons. It seems foolish to do that.

Now that Wal-Mart came to this side of town... the area is looking a little better, and other businesses are coming here, knowing that they will do a good business. Property values are increasing.

Sorry about the "Mom and Pop" shops that you are fond of that know your name going out of business. It's not like that here....before Wal-Mart...it was just dust and tumbleweeds. The shopping was on the other side of town...

I thought Sam Walton was a Baptist anyway.
