What's Your Opinion of .....

..... Having your (or anyone else's) young daughter(s) taking ballet-type "dance" lessons?

I'm only asking for your opinion(s) and/or view(s) on this.

I'm in no way trying to be "judgmental" at all. I have no children at all, so I don't have any real "dog in the 'fight.'"

Some people on BB might be opposed to any/all forms of "dancing" (especially if it's "in public"). Some would probably consider "dancing" pretty close to being one of those "unpardonable sins."

Personally, I don't "dance." Even before I received Christ as my Savior (April, 1966), I would have been so uncoordinated that I'd be "on the floor on all four's" as soon as I even attempted to "dance." Then when you factor in my having suffered a stroke about 4 years ago---well, my "dancing" would probably be one of those clips on the "America's Funniest Home Videos" program!!

Anyway, most parents tell me that they consider ballet-type "dance" to be more of a good means of physically developing their daughter(s) balance and/or coordination.

This is probably true.

Moreover, I've attended some worship services that occasionally incorporate what they call "Interpretive Movement" rather than "dancing."

Okay, whatever.

Anyway, I'd just like to read y'all's opinion/view on this. Nothing more, nothing less.

Again, she's your daughter(s), and therefore I'm not going to "sit in judgment" of your parenting methods.

All I'm asking is merely y'all's opinion(s) and/or view(s) on this.

[WPE3BQL will probably "dance with joy" reading what my BB friends have to say about this!! :wavey:]

All dancing is of the devil. It will lead to women wearing pants, men attending a motion picture THEE-ater and smoking non-filtered cigarettes. Dancing leads children into a life of unnecessary physical motion that will look like they are having _____ while standing.

Dancing will cause Bob Jones to spin in his grave upsetting the delicate balance of gravity and the rotation of the earth. Dancing in New York will trigger the butterfly effect causing flooding in Spain and snow in Japan.

Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.

Imo, there is dancing and then there is dancing. To clarify, there is dancing that you take lessons for and is a coordinated, nonsexual thing (although some Latin dances cross that line), and then there's the sexual gyrations that this generation calls dancing.

I am not opposed to the former, but my girls will not be taking part in the latter.

My daughter never danced. She does roller derby instead. I wished she'd danced.

On the serious side, my daughters all took ballet from the time they were about 4 years old until they were around 12 or so. It was a fantastic choice for each of them because it helped them to learn to move their body safely in a classical dance. Nothing was sensual and they didn't do any performances at all. The dance instructor that we have the privilege of having here in my village is a well known ballet educator and she has some pretty strict rules for when the children perform and she would have "informances" where the parents would be able to sit in on a class. I loved that dance studio but each of my girls by around 12 decided to no longer continue to dance when they joined…..

our church dance/worship team. :) Again, these are not sensual dances and usually they dance with tambourines or flags or streamers and incorporate a lot of ballet moves. There is a year training that they must go through which is pretty strict and it includes a LOT of discipleship/structure/Scripture memory/mentoring and 2 of my girls are now leaders in it and my youngest just passed her assessment a few weeks ago and will be on the full team as of September. I know some feel this is inappropriate but I do not find it so at all.

Anne, I find it very interesting as well as awesome that your church has dancers and flags. Years ago I attneded Eagles Nest in Tustin, CA and not only did they raise their hands when singing, they danced and had a flag and dance praise team. This was in the late 80s and it was a charismatic fellowship. I am blessed to see that level of praise and worship has finally made its way into the Baptist church as it adds a level of excitement to worship and praise that is badly needed. Shalom!
