When was our planet created according to Genesis 1?

In Genesis 1:2 scripture says the earth was "formless and void." That means, it seems to me, the earth did not exist. Obvious, others think this describes a planet existing in chaos.

I think scripture says the planet was formed in verse 1:9.

What say you?

so, how does "formless and void" mean that it "did not exist"?

Genesis 1:1, says that "in the beginning God Created the heavens and the earth". This is what is know as Creatio ex nihilo, that is, God Created everything out of nothing. There is NO Creation prior to Genesis 1:1.

Again, you and others have failed to understand the broad usage of the word "chaos"; it most certainly does not always have the meaning of "unorderly". As I have shown in another thread, it also means:

"earliest condition of universe: the unbounded space and formless matter supposed to have existed before the creation of the universe"

Which is the description of the heavens and earth, before the Lord filled the universe with His Handiwork.

the title says, "when was our planet created according to Genesis 1. But your OP does not address this?

If you want a date for Creation, then I am of the opinion of a young earth, and agree with Archbishop James Ussher on his conclusions

I was just listening to J. Vernon McGee- he states that he believes a major catastrophic event happened between vs 1 & 2
Genesis 1 :: King James Version (KJV)
That is what I had understood to have been referred to as the gap theory. And the "was" in Genesis 1:2, ". . . And the earth was without form, and void; . . ." is argued to mean "became." I personally do not hold that view.

But I do believe the 6 days from Genesis 1:3-31 were actual Earth days in which God did in those 6 days pretaining to our Earth. I believe day 1 God turned on our Sun.

Actually I had never heard the theory of McGee before - I thought maybe - God did a "partial creation" until the he decided to complete the six day creation.
I do accept the "gap theory" but am unsure why or how it happened.

If you adhere to the Gap Theory then you have death and destruction before sin

not to mention that it is an attack upon the character and nature of God since it refutes the wisdom, sovereignty, glory and power of God

When God divided the waters with the expanse, or 'firmament', then the earth began to take form. The Deep was the raw material for the formation of the heavens and the earth. It was created in the beginning. But the earth had not yet been formed. That is why it is said the earth was formless and empty.

So the question as to when the earth was made, if we're just talking about the rocks and the water, that would be days 1 through 3. But as a habitat for man, it was days 1 through 5.

But actually, all of Creation was for the purpose of the earth and man, or more acurately, for the Man and the Main Event for which the earth is mainly a stage.

The Cross.

There is more than one interpreation of what happed in the "gap." I never accepted any of them. As a new Christian after I received Christ in 1962 and as I learned of the 6 day creation story. I did not at that time accept literal days. And had noticed the word "day" was used to describe the whole week in Genesis 2:4, ". . . These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, . . ." It was not until as a young adult I understood the "geologial time scale" evidence could be explained by the global flood as world wide flood evidence that I was able to believe those 6 days were actual days.

Yes, verse 9 does refer to forming the earth, though the word isn't used there.

The Bible says in its very first verse, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

The very next verse indicates the earth is present, yet has not been formed or filled. Those will be declared finished in the first verse of chapter 2.

Genesis 2:4 refers to both creating, usually considered ex nihilo (as in Gen 1:1), and making, usually referring to working with something already present.

"These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,"

Yes I know since I hold a differing view, my view makes no sense, and I do not understand creation out of nothing. However, only nothing is formless, any thing as a form.

I did not say chaos existed before order.
