It's a heart thing, friend. For some, I suspect one time is vain, two times repetitious and three times boring.

For others of us, it is from the heart and never too much.

We sing from the Sword of the Lord hymnal.
Any specials run along the same lines, very conservative.

We sing mainly traditional hymns with a "Chorus-of-the-month" each service.

Our choir uses mostly three-part Majesty Music/Ron Hamilton arrangements.

The specials vary from traditional gospel songs to southern gospel. I play piano by ear and southern gospel is the only style I know. When I have to sub for our regular pianist, the congregational singing is southern gospel as well. We have live accompianist for each special; no "canned" music.

We sing all types. Due to our location, most of the choir music sounds like country-bluegrass type Southern Gospel music.

We do "blended" music, but if I did not demand a certain hymn before/after the message, I am sure that the hymnals would never be used.

We have all instruments, but usually led by keyboard and guitar, sometimes with piano added. Even had the organ uncovered for a service (first time in 7 months).

I would make a better Presbyterian. Absolute disdain for 99% of the so-called "praise" music, and the pentecostal theology most teach (to the thumping of rock beat).

Love the great old hymns. If it isn't 300 years old, it's questionable.

We have a combination of music, but lean toward the traditional hymns.

Do we like our praise music because when the next "version" of the Bible comes out and it omits, hell, judgement, the depravity of man and the bondage of sin, then it will match our music?

    Tanks -----Bart

P.S. Praise music when equaled with CCM.

Bob, three hundred years ago some of those hymns were new, too! There are a good many of the new choruses which are simply taken from Psalms. My kids learned the choruses in church and Sunday school and later, when we did Bible study at home and one of those Psalms was read, there would be this look of delighted recognition on the face of that youngster, "I know that one!"

The praise choruses less then three hundred years old have their place, I think!

Bart, it's not such a bad thing to concentrate on praising the Lord. It's what we will be doing all eternity; let's get in a little practice now, at least!

My church also uses the Sword of the Lord Hymnal. and the music is accompanied by a full Choir, Orchestra (no drums, or guitars THANK YOU) and piano and organ...I love it. I believe the traditional hymns are a wonderful way to set the tone for great preaching. I have attended churches where it was all praise bands and praise choruses...hated it...I've also attended churches where we all had to sing accapella...hated it. It seems that many of the praise choruses lead people into a charismatic type of hand waving hand clapping type of worship that i do not believe is right

Our church has a traditional "musically" service at 830. Hymns. I like hymns, but a lot of the people seem to be in autopilot when they sing, which is a joy robber to me.

I attend the 1045 service. Blended, though we rarely do hymns in the traditional sense. We have a band with drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, bongos when needed, keyboard, and, of course, with me in percussion.

    We rock.

No. Any music can be sinful if injected with a sinful message, be it rock or Bach.

My church only sings "praise" songs and it drives me crazy. I wish we could throw in some of those awesome old hymns. Most of the songs seem to sing about my relationship with God in one sense or another and not just on how awesome God is. I like praise music and even the kind described above, but a little more variety could be in order.

I don't think rock music is sinfil in itself, though it is hard to find groups out there that don't combine it with sinfil lyrics and/or lifestyles. It is even worse when you are considering rap. There really isn't a large community of healthy lyric rap musicians.

    CHURCH

We start the morning service with 4 or 5 Scripture In Song choruses with piano, and maybe a newer song with a CD. 3 or 4 hymns through the service with piano & organ.

Night service is mainly "The Hymnal" and "Sankey's", again with a song or two from CD.

At jam sessions we have mainly been practicing the best of the newer songs (piano, bass, drums, guitar).

    MYSELF

I agree with all of the above. A good solid mix.

I think that Rock music is sorta sinful in nature.
I was a heavy metal headbanger in highschool. I went to all the concerts such as Iron Maiden and Metallica and all that.
When I look back, and now listening to music wether it be Rock Rap or whatever, not alot of it gives glory to God.
1 Corinthians 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
Sin starts in the mind. If trash is going in your mind, trash is gonna come out your mouth and your body.

I really have to pay attention to the songs. Even country. Praise the Lord that Ol Charlie Daniels is now saved. His music was alot about drinkin and whatever else. I really hate that I love to fish song, I don't know who the heck sings it but it is the MOST disrespectful song to women.
As for my church,,,,,,well...Rock and any Christian Rock is totally not good, pretty much any kind of music that does not glorify God is not good. Can I blame them for their convictions???
The way I discern music and TV....if it is not approriate for my kids, then its not appropriate for me!
Except news and stuff like that.

I would like to add a bit to this, as well. I felt I was saved out of rock music when I was saved, so I threw all my secular rock/pop music out the window, and started listening to "CCM." What really unnerved me about CCM was:
    1. The weak message, not much about sin, or the consequences.
    2. The fact that there is not one CCM artist that I know of who is not tainted by the world (performing secular songs, performing with secular artists, etc.). If you can think of any that are untainted, please tell me.
    3. They were performing some of the songs that had held me in bondage so long (DC Talk performing Beatles and Doobie Bros., Third Day performing Beatles, Geoff Moore and the Distance performing The Who, Audio Adrenaline performing The Who).

I was saved out of this anti-christ type of atmosphere, only to have it infiltrate through CCM. Am I bitter? Yes. I feel that Satan tried a back-door approach. There are even CCM musicians that perform Led Zeppelin songs (my favorite group before I was saved). That's pathetic.
