Where is God’s Place and when did He ever leave it?

God speaking to Israel declares that he is returning to his place which is in heaven and will remain there until they confess one particular sin that they as a nation have committed.

Well when did God ever leave his place? At the incarnation the virgin birth.

What single sin was committed by the nation that caused him to return? The unpardonable sin of Matthew 12, the national rejection of the Messiahship of Jesus on the basis of demon possession.

According to first century Pharisaic Judaism there were particular miracles that could only be performed by the Jewish Messiah when he came. First was the healing of a Jewish leper. Second was the healing of a man born blind. And third was the casting out of a demon that caused its victim to be mute.

Leviticus dedicates a whole chapter on what must take place when a Jewish leper is healed. But the instructions given were never put into practice until Yeshua performed this specific Messianic miracle.

The Sanhedrin had in place a policy for investigations of anyone claiming to be the Messiah. Because of the miracles performed they started the first phase of the investigation which was the stage of observation. They were forbidden to ask any questions and only were aloud to observe and then report back if this persons claim was significant or not. That is why when the leaders from all of the parts of Israel go to see him it says Jesus knew their thoughts, they were silent. After their initial report the second phase of investigation went out, the stage of interrogation. From that point forward Jesus always has a Pharisee following him asking questions. All the while this is happening you had John the Baptist teaching, you had the people hearing about one who’s made claim as their Messiah and not to mention that the first century Jewish mindset was one of expectation that their Messiah was coming. After all they had already lived past the captivity and a second temple was functioning.

Now in Matthew 12 there was brought to Jesus a man demonized who could not speak. He was brought as a test case. The Pharisees had a method of exorcism that required getting the demon to speak and getting him to reveal his name and then he could be cast out. Jesus himself used this method with Legion.

When Jesus cast out this demon by doing so he forced the people to decide if he was their Messiah. And they responded by asking among themselves how can he do that miracle that we have been taught that only the Messiah could do when he comes? At that point rather than deciding for themselves they looked to the Pharisees who explained it away by claiming that Beelzebub gave Jesus the power to do that specific miracle.

The careful student of scripture will note that this was not the first time in the history of Israel that the nation as a nation made a decision that they could not retreat from; Kadesh Barnea.

This is what the unpardonable sin was as is shown in the only context to which it is found in scripture. It was the national rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by Israel while he was present on the basis of demon possession. It was only unpardonable nationally and even as such was only unpardonable for “this wicked generation” of Jesus’ day. Many Jews who came to faith after the resurrection were forgiven for taking part in the unpardonable sin.

Jesus has indeed returned to his place at the right hand of God the Father and will not return until the Jews as a nation asks him to.

The unpardonable sin of Matthew 12 is a turning point in all of scripture. Three major changes took place in the ministry of Jesus after the unpardonable sin. First, he instituted among the disciples a policy of silence. They were now forbidden to proclaim his messiahship to the nation. Second, he no longer from this point forward will heal the masses but will only heal on the basis of individual faith. And thirdly, Jesus will now only speak in parables. When asked why he is using the parabolic method of teaching he tells his disciples that it was to hide the truth concerning the kingdom from the people.

Rather than instituting the physical Kingdom on earth in Israel the kingdom went into mystery form as represented by the parables. For example the three measures of meal are the three major denominations in Christendom, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, and Greek Orthodoxy. All three have leaven all three would have elements of false doctrines. The mustard tree growing into the enormous monstrosity with the demonic birds nesting in it such as Mormonism, JW’s, SD Adventism etc.

By understanding the unpardonable sin for what it truly was, these changes made in the life and ministry of Messiah make valid sense.
