Where were you stationed?

Yes at LACKLAND.
At Grifiss
We were in some old officers (pilots) rooms. we were intel and info (EDP) in with the SAC unit.
I never got used to the SAC alerts.
I had a room all to my self for a long time, then got a roommate which was fine.

 

I didn't know! I was always kinda proud I served in the same unit (twenty years later) that was the first to reach Bastone, the tip of Patton's spear. I guess my Class A shoulder patches are a collector item.

I see I was learning to march about 7 years before you at Ft Polk. My home was in North Ft Polk. I visited there after my children had grown and moved out, didn't recognize much. But I do have an Alameda story. Years ago, one of the older gentlemen in my old timers Sunday School class told me that he grew up in Alameda, and had seen B-25's at an airstrip near the docks early in WWII. Funny the things that stick in our memories....

 

My mother was in the Navy, so when I was little we lived in a lot of different places. But she left the Navy when I was about 5 years old.
To my recollection, we lived in:
Charleston, North Carolina
New Jersey
Italy
Sicily

My mom was also stationed in Guam a couple times. She used to tell me all about it.

Probably more places than that. The place we live now is also a Navy town, and the last place she was stationed before she left.

I had basic and part of AIT at Ft. Polk, and all I can figure is that my love for the place must have been something like Stockholm syndrome. When it was all over, I didn't want to leave. We had the old wood frame WW2 barracks, and I got to where I liked it.

Talk about a simple life style! Moving was no big deal. All my possessions could be stuffed into a duffle bag and then a bus ticket to anywhere would do it for me.

 

Yes, our basic training barracks were just as yours, only 7 years newer. We trained with M-14's and yes by the end of the day they weighed a lot. One of my favorite memories was marching (in April or May) along a dirt road, and we could see a wall of rain ahead of us. Bone dry on one side, a downpour (huge droplets) on the other side. The DI had us march into the rain which soaked us, and then had us stop and put on our ponchos. Brings a smile to my face even now.
