Where's the pulpit

Do you mean running about like a gymnast? An Oral Roberts sort of thing,,,or Jimmy Swaggart?

Don't use one, though we have one. Feel like I'm standing behind a wall when it's up.

 

I can't remember who the old pastor was who wrote a book that let church members in on the fact their church might be going "Purpose Driven." And, one warning sign was that the pulpit was removed or modified as if that piece of furniture was a required fixture in any Baptist church. I understand the idea of protecting the pulpit but there doesn't have to be a literal piece of furniture for the pastor to stand behind in order for that concept to be understood. My church has a pulpit but it's shaped like a cross. It's not very big and I don't feel like I'm standing behind the Rock of Gibraltar when I preach. Of course I don't stay behind it very often anyway.

I talk to walk as I preach. I normally only stand behind the pulpit when I am moving from one point to another, as I want people to focus on the transition of thought and not on where I am moving to.

Our interim doesn't walk as much as I do, but he does move about as he moves through his sermon

 

I would be so confused if someone was walking about as they spoke, I would need some extra book to read whilst waiting for service to end.

I am too formal for my own good, I suppose, but I am English.

Anyway...
I remember being taught as a child or teen that our pulpit was in the middle of the raised stage because that's where the preacher would put his Bible and from there expound upon it, and the Bible was the central object in the room. And, that those churches who had a "divided chancel" did so because the Bible was secondary to them - their primary thing was the altar where the "sacrifice of the mass" was done.

Our communion table, then, is down on the floor in front so that all who have been born again may feel welcome to "come to the Lord's table."

Does that sound like the explanations you all remember?

Jims right about the pulpit being in the center. We have more of a movable wood podiem. But I wander around on the platform some. I have a friend that wanders off the platform and into the congregation. He's used to doing that I guess.:laugh:
