which car to buy?

How many of you would buy a new car with less than 100 HP? 50 HP?

My favorite all time vehicle was a '74 40 HP VW Bus. With a modern diesel engine it would probably get 40 MPG. Of course, it would not pull a boat trailer over Snoqualimie Pass at 70 MPH.

I get about 8 mpg in town. Not sure about hwy. But....its paid off.

Most people would be happy to get over 20. Why risk more debt to save a few sheckles on fuel?

Winner.

I made this mistake once.

When gas hits 10 bucks a gallon, then I'll start to look this way again.

At the end of the year, when it's all said and done...what I was saving in gas was about 1500.

I didn't make that difference up in what I paid to swap out cars.

You have to look at all the numbers. Back in '89 (?) I was driving a 10 MPG truck 100 miles a day. I saw a story on the Chev Metro getting better than 40 MPG. I went to the closest dealer and bought one on credit. Only thing I bought on credit in the last 40 years. The payments and increased insurance and new gas bill were less than my old gas costs.

I'm going to need a new car anyway so I might as well get one with good MPG. I'm liking the Ford Focus. What about the Kia Forte, anyone have one?

Sometimes you have to spend money to make (or save) money

Took 30 years for me to learn that I didn't know squat about cars. Last two have been factory guaranteed used Toyotas and no complaint.
