Which Pastor would you choose?

If you could choose one of these Pastors for your church, who would it be?

I thought this would be an interesting Poll.

None of the above - I choose only the men that God appoints to their places of service.

I thank God that most of the men on that list agree(d) with me.

It is time we demanded that God's people quit seeking rock stars and started serving God.

sigh Yes I know. I apologize if I didn't word my question perfectly.
I was interested in which Pastor's style/teaching you prefer. No need to read more into it.

Interesting choice of words . . .

"If you could choose one of these Pastors for your church"

. . . to listen to a pastor preach is a bit different from having a pastor for 'my church'.

IMHO, that is.

But, I still think even listening to a 'good pastor' can harm many pastors . . . we already have enough theatrical competition without making preaching into a new American Idol - Preacher's Edition.

IMHO, that is.

 Well I did want to choose men most of us have either heard or read. And I tried to put in a different mix of preachers to choose from. So there ya go.

I'm not sure who I would pick myself. I am leaning towards one..

Rachel....don't you worry one bit. Myself and probably most everyone who read this poll knew exactly what you meant.

We know that you didn't mean that our churches were going to dismiss our pastors and send a search committee to these men!!!!

(Especially with some of them being dead, for crying out loud!)

It is very plain that you meant that who would be good for your church and whose philosophies of preaching or style of preaching could be of benefit to your congregation.

I think you were very clear in the wording of your poll.....and I voted for Max Lucado.

Ed Edwards

Cousin Jonathan Edwards was pastor of the same church for
24 years (1726-1750, Northampton Church, Mass).

Cousin John Edwards of N.Carolina for President!!!

Well, for all of your clearness, you did not hear the important response . . .

But, I still think even listening to a 'good pastor' can harm many pastors . . . we already have enough theatrical competition without making preaching into a new American Idol - Preacher's Edition.

I am a 'great' speaker, and I have never felt intimidation when a congregant mentioned how great Reverend ' fill in the blank 's sermon was. And I have heard the traditional, "Don't you wish you could preach as good as Joel Osteen?" ONLY HAD THAT ONCE. My reply shut that up . . . and I got an embarrassed, "Sorry."

But, I know preachers that are not any where near as good . . . and they should NEVER be compared to the likes of Spurgeon . . .

Our local pastors need to be supported. Not compared to pastors that had the privilege of full time preaching and being gifted speakers and anointed by the Holy Spirit.

Did you choose Edwards because of the name? :) I have enjoyed reading some of these older preachers sermons. Pretty powerful stuff.

Hi Rachel! :wavey:

I was kind of torn between Charles Spurgeon and Jonathan Edwards, but I finally chose Jonathan Edwards.

I have a grandson named after him. Jonathan is his first name and Edwards is his middle name.

SO...if I chose Spurgeon, Warren, and Edwards...

...would I get a preacher that delivered the sermon "Sinners in the hands of an angry Purpose-Driven God" while smoking a cigar?

I guess you could combine that with Copeland...then when he got lung cancer from the cigars, he could speak against that demon in Jesus' name.

While it would be a unique experence to listen to Charles Spurgeon or Jonathan Edwards, I don't think their style would be as effective today as it was when they lived.

I've only listened to Rick Warren preach once, (this past Christmas) and it was good...
...but most significantly, I'd like to work under his leadership style.

Jonathan Edwards' habit of reading his sermon manuscript in a dry monotone would severely tax my ability to listen. If I were a member of his congregation, I would prefer that he hand out copies of his manuscript and then we could meet and discuss his message in a small group. :)

Funny, all three: calvinism, purpose-driven, and cigar smoking, can cause a pastor to find himself without a church.
