The White House is collecting and storing comments and videos placed on its social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube without notifying or asking the consent of the site users, a failure that appears to run counter to President Obama's promise of a transparent government and his pledge to protect privacy on the Internet.

The National Legal and Policy Center, a government ethics watchdog, said archiving the sites would have a "chilling effect" on Web site users who might wish to leave comments critical of the administration.

Is there any information on what they were gathering or for what purpose?

Based on what I just read in that brief article, they are collecting publically accessible content and storing it. Nothing wrong with that, though I would wonder why.

and there is a difference between google who provides the databases and the President of the United States archiving opposing information. There is no legitimate reason for it. But the koolaide must taste good.

why they're keeping it so quiet?

Plus one needs to consider his recent misuse of the names gathered at his "snitch" website.

This is nothing really new. It's been going on since the Patriot Act passed. That doesn't mean I support it.

Privacy advocates fear that expanded police power under the Patriot Act — combined with lax oversight and increased cooperation between the government and private sector phone network and Internet gatekeepers — may be stomping on civil liberties.
The new laws do not apply just to terrorism but to other crimes as well.

Apples and oranges.

This article states that it was part of a law enforcement program against crimes.

Obama isn't claiming to be doing it for that purpose.

His last go around was for purposes of ferretting out opposition.

Why should we believe that this is any different?

I condemn it, OK. Please don't try to put words in my mouth. Have you condemned it from the passage of the Patriot Act as I have or do you condemn it only as it relates to a Democratic president? I'll bet you supported Bush's every move which took away our freedom as necessary to combat "terrorism."
