Aaron,
RFW is correct.
When Adam ate of the fruit in the garden he died that day spiritually and began his death physically. This sinful nature and spiritually deadness was passed on to all generations of man. This is the condition that we find ourselves in today. We are born spiritually dead!
Until we are born again, born for the second time, we are spiritually dead and cannot enter heaven. Jesus the second Adam, led a sinless life and therefore did not deserve to die. But He willingly went to the cross for us. In Him we can be born again, and His righteousness covers all of our sins. Our spirit is reborn. When God looks at us He sees us through Christ's righteousness.
