ckm49er,
Violin is a great choice! I say that when you're picking an instrument or say you have kids and want them to learn to play, you should let them pick the instrument that they really want to learn. It makes it a lot easier and a lot more fun. Do you have anyone there that plays? And did you mean the upright bass as in classical or bluegrass? If you meant bluegrass then it would be a LOT easier to learn than violin.
You must live in a small town? I'm surprised all of TX's music shops don't deal in strings. lol You might wanna try Southwest Strings, it's kinda far away though(AZ) but you can check it out if you want.
www.swstrings.com Also you might want to try putting an add in the paper for an intermediate used violin. Or if you have a local radio station you could try that. We have one and you can call in and advertise, say you're looking for something, ect. If you do advertise, I would make sure that you had them play it for you. Listen to the sound of the violin, not the person. My mom buys beginner violins off of ebay and sells them using the radio station. I always play for whoever is interested and they usually end up buying. I play fiddle and usually will play a waltz then a rag or hoedown and since they don't know anything about it, they watch the fast fingers and think that it's the best violin they could possibly buy.

It'd be better if you knew someone that played and they could try it out for you. I probably wouldn't try ebay b/c it'll probably say "intermediate" and actually be beginner's.
Good luck and let me know what happens, it's always good to hear someone else is interested in learning to play the best instrument in the world!
In His love,
Alicia
