"Based on what you know about him in history books, what do you think Abraham Lincoln would be doing if he were alive today?
    1. Writing his memoirs of the Civil War.
    2. Advising the President.
    3. Desperately clawing at the inside of his coffin."

    Worst was Jimmy Carter.

I'm surprised at how many say W. What's the deal? You people don't like prosperity and safety?

Interesting perspective. I personally think that Abraham Lincoln was one of the three best presidents we have ever had, along with George Washington and Franklin Roosevelt.

Bill Clinton handsdown was the worst president ever. He was a coward who watched this country be attacked again and again during his term and did absolutely nothing about it. He disgraced the office. He widdled down our military to something that is barely even a fighting a force and unable to fight third world countries effectly even with the National Guard and Reserves being called to active duty. He has decimated this country and has done so while the majority of this country thinks he was a "good" man. Long after we are gone the truth about him will rise to the surface.

    Carter and Lincoln

I was in High School when Carter was president and remember his fiascos well

I agree with the others on Lincoln...another interesting book is When in the Course of Human Events which outlines some of his actions during the "War between the States."

    Clinton by far!!!

Clinton is the worst in my life time hands down. Lincoln holds that spot for presidents before my life time (totally ignores the Constitution and gets patted on the back like some hero). And what gives? G. W. Bush has his faults, yes, (don't we all?) but since 9/11 we haven't been attacked on our own soil again have we? (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    RE: Presidents

I will not talk about presidents before my time because I don't want to read histroy on them. Why? How am I to know that the things these authors write about aren't slanted one way or the other?

The best: I know a lot in here will climb up my back, but I will say Bill Clinton. I know that what he did with Monica Lewinsky was WRONG! But that did not affect the way he did his job. He will stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ for himself, and not anyone else. Look at are economy when he was in there and what it is like now! Exxon posted a $39.5 BILLION profit last year. George Walker Bush and Dick Chaney own oil, Exxon is a Oilo Mogul.....hmmmm, very interesting. So, I know that Clinton wasn't the Moralest(I know it's not a word) president ever, but he did have it to where we did not have to pawn things to buy gas. I saw on our local news one time, where people were having to "hock" their items to buy gas to get back and forth in travel. We did not have to do that when Clinton was in office. Remember, this is a question about best president, not most koral one.

The worst: George W. Bush. Enough said.

May God Bless!! John 3:16 :1_grouphug:

    Carter the Worst???

Look, I am not in here singing his praise as president, but he, Jimmy Carter is getting a bum steer. He took over the presidency from someone who wasn't even voted in as Vice-president. He was placed in as VP after Agnew reisigned and after Nixon left, he took over. So, Carter won the 1976 election from someone who was never even elected VP or president. Jimmy Carter was a man who wanted peace, but no one else did. He tried his best. I know that he is far from the best, but he is far from the worst. I didn't like the way the hostages were handled, but I truly believed he did his best. But no other countries he tried to talk to, wanted to listen. May God Bless!! John3:16 :1_grouphug:

They will be slanted one way or another. Even the most dispassionate, even-handed historian will pick and choose what to include and what to leave out. Furthermore, if the historian has no opinion and no point of view about what is important and what is good and evil, then the book would probably be too boring to be readable.

Some people stick to reading the original sources (rare). You can get a sense of a person by reading their own writings and what was said of them by their contemporaries. The most reliable approach is to read several sources and pay attention to the footnotes.

    Worst president ever?

    ...Jefferson Davis

    ;)

Sorry, just had to say that after all posts blaming Lincoln for the deaths in the Civil War. Seems awfully convenient to forget which side fired the first shots :)
