Who wants to play for the National Title?

As an OU alumni i just got an offer to attend the
Feista Boll. No info on who OU plays???

People keep asking a playoff system, but I'm not convinced it is the best thing. First, the most teams we would ever see in a playoff is 8 teams. We would never see 16 teams - too many and it takes too long (unless you shorten the season and eliminate the conference championships). Remember, these are students, aren't they?

So if we had a 4-team playoff this year using the BCS formula, you would have OSU, LSU, Va Tech and Oklahoma. In this year of parity, there would be several teams left out that would have legitimate gripes - esp. USC and Hawaii.

If we had an 8-team playoff, Hawaii still gets left out, which would be very unfair.

I say go back to the traditional Bowl system and let the pollsters decide. Who cares about a National Championship? These are just kids and students, aren't they? Well, sad to say, they are not anymore. They are just extrememly underpaid professionals. At this point, it might be best to quit the charade and just pay these guys and eliminate any ties to academics - i.e., no classes are required - they are just hired guns. The student-athlete is a myth for the most part, so let's quit being hypocritical about it.

I'm a born and bred Tiger fan from Louisiana and my wife is from Ohio...i may need some marriage counseling here soon.

Other than being a fan, i think LSU will win because in a month they should be back to full strength and should be playing ball like they did at the beginnig of the season. Right now they are so dinged and banged up on defense, it wasn't surprising to me to see Arkansas run on them like they did. With a full and healthy defense, that game would have probably never made it to OT.

Holding to UT to only 14 points and winning with an untested QB also gives me a lot of hope for the BCS and the future.
I'm saying LSU by by 13 right now.

Atleast with the BCS there is one game to determine the champion. In the old system you could have share titles and to me that is just silly.

 

They also have shorter seasons and no conference championship games, right? Under the current schedule and conference championships, there is no way they could have a 16-team playoff. They might as well pay these guys full-time salaries at that point.

I'm coming at it from a different angle - college football is a sham. It is professional football. It is the minor league of the NFL - a very successful minor league. Why are we "requiring" these guys to go to class? Why are we not paying them when their most important asset in life is to entertain us by performing greatly on the field?

No doubt some changes would be needed. But if the powers that be really wanted a playoff they could and would make it work.

Since you answer your own questions and say these are not just kids and students, but in fact professionals, then what is your objection to a playoff?

 

Because it adds another layer of hypocrisy on this thing we call college football. But on the other hand, maybe the thing is so hypocritical already that another layer won't really mean that much. It makes little difference to me.

 

I like his plan, and I think it is very doable and would make for a great few weeks of football!

Have you noticed how on those sports talk panels those guys want to differentiate between "which teams are playing the best in the country right now" and "which teams deserve to be in the championship game.?"

Though I personally don't like it, Oklahoma should be one of teams based on "playing the best right now." Then Georgia, Ohio St., LSU, and USC have legitimate claims as another of those. But then based on "which teams deserve to be there"... what is that? not losing games? In that case, it's Hawaii, then Ohio St. and Kansas. I would like to have seen Kansas voted in the top 2 just to witness the reactions of Nebraska and Oklahoma fans; what they think about Kansas going when OU won the Big 12 and Kansas didn't even play for it. That would also make a lot of fans say there is a "Heartland Bias" in the polling, since Nebraska (2001), Oklahoma (2003), and now Kansas play for the NC without winning their conference :laugh: .
