Who wears a tie to church?

A properly fitting suit shouldn't be uncomfortable.

I agree with this. When I do go and buy a new suit it is well tailored. Makes it look great.

But this cuts both ways doesn't it? I've seen a number of people wearing suits and dresses who look terribly sloppy. Just because it is a suit doesn't mean it is automatically going to fit well. I mean how many times have I seen a novelty tie that is mismatched with a wrinkled, oversized suit and bad shirt?

If you want people to dress well then it doesn't mean suit and tie. I can dress well in slacks and a well fitting shirt. If this is going to be your argument you're going after the height of subjectivity.

I remember a lady one time asking me if it was ok to attend church without a hat. This was a summer resort area. My immediate response was, "I don't mind if you come in a swimsuit; just come." I was just joking, but the essence was true.

Having said this, I really do think that properly dressed is fit and proper, and that does not include short trousers and slip shoes.

Cheers,

Jim

It's a good thing that we don't answer to you then. Robes and sandals were the attire in the first church.

Although our pastor is quite fundamentalist and conservative, we are expected to dress the way we would dress if going before a judge in a court-room for trial. In other words, if you can dress that nice for a human judge, you should dress at least the same way for God. I do not disagree with him and because I run the sound, all that work for the church, such as ushers are all expected to wear coat and ties. The only exception is the pastor may remove his jacket when preaching due to the high temperatures we have been having in Oklahoma (110 or so).

Here in South Texas you wear an orange jumpsuit if you go before a judge. I never thought of wearing one to church, though.

Standards of decency in society.

So in your opinion we should all dress like Ozzie and Harriet?

Also, I would almost never get to wear my suits if I didn't wear them to church. I didn't buy them to hang in my closet all the time.

That sounds like a personal problem. Mine is that I have three suits and whenever I choose to wear one I have to blow the dust off.

Nonsense.

Worship is a matter of the heart, not a matter of the clothes.

I recall Christ haveing some very serious things to say to a group of people who loved making a big show of themselves, so as to have the preiminance.

They were called scribes and pharisees

I also recall in James where the topic of the rich, and their "fine apparel" are not exactly viewed as something of great inportance.

He also believes we should stand out from a non-Christian crowd where-ever we go and that includes nose studs, short-shorts and women should be careful they don't dress in a way that causes a man to lust after them. That is for their husband only.

I must say that I have to agree with him because as we tend to move towards liberalism it will not stop until it enters the theology itself.

But Philip, I go to the Lord a few times a day every day. If I followed your pastors logic, Id wear my suit 24/7.....that isnt going to happen. A pair of dockers & a polo shirt for service I think is sufficient. Now Im not saying to look like a mutt & women should use decorum (if not others should instruct), but I believe the Cary Grant button down era is over.

I'm not like that. I don't show off my suits at church. The only time I'm in front of the church is when I'm in my gorgeous choir robe. It's not about me; it's about God.

That's why we keep the A/C cranked down in church.

...which can cause problems for people who aren't wearing suits (for example, women in dresses).

Additionally, I don't know about your church, but my church has some exterior walkways between Sunday School classrooms and other parts of the church. A/C only works after you are already in the church. It does nothing for getting to and from the service, and it certainly makes no difference on getting into a hot car after you leave the service.

Several times this summer I have broken a sweat almost immediately after leaving my car or the church building because it was so hot outside (heat index around 110). I was wearing slacks and a polo. There is no way I could have handled wearing a suit.

One problem I see is that suits are far too expensive to expect a person to buy them only to wear in church. I don't wear suits all that often, but my job sometimes requires them for certain events. I have known people who did not own a suit or jacket.

I have no problem with a suit being worn to church, but I do object when the expectation is that a person is required to wear one. My objection is not because I want to look "sloppy." I generally wear to church what I wear to work (slacks and dress shirt or polo).

Sunday mornings I usually wear a tie.. sometimes jacket... always pants!
Sunday Evenings casual...
Wed. evenings casual.. this past wed. I wore a black shirt that says in yellow letters., "Pastor, don't shoot".. across the back... (we had an executive board meeting after service...LOL"
I've also wore a shirt that says, "All stressed out and no one to choke" lol

A manner of dress is just as much a communication as it is a utility. People who dress shabbily (who have the means to do otherwise) are basically communicating their shabby attitudes toward their vessels and toward those around them.

This topic has been hashed over in this forum before. I believe that the state of this country is reflected in the attitudes that we church-goers have....everything is less important, eveything is lais·sez faire these days across the board....

I still dress up for church. I have always felt that my Lord deserves honor and respect. I wear jeans and tee shirts to picnics and bbqs and yes, even to work....but not church.

That is nothing more than your opinion.
