    From ESPN.com,

Q:With all the speculation on filling the coaching position at Indiana University, what is your take and choice for this spot?

Bill Simmons: I vote for Isiah Thomas. This is the logical next move for him -- completely destroying the storied tradition of IU basketball. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Interesting. In this case, I think I've got to go with Alford as the other candidate. If so, IU and Alford are both doing a fantastic job of keeping it a secret.

    They sure are.

ESPN's Andy Katz is reporting that IU made contact to Mark Few, but he has no interest. I did not think they could do that while the season was still going? And I wonder if Gonzaga loses tonight does his thoughts on the job change?

I don't think any rules are NCAA-wide about contacting coaches during play. It depends on the school.

One of the things that's unusual about Alford from what I'm reading is his contract at Iowa. He has to give 30 days notice about any other job according to AP. That may be the sticking point with IU. I don't know if you can wait that long. I agree that Missouri's interest could be to spike up IU's numbers, but if IU was really interested and Alford had that job locked, would Missouri still be interested? Probably, but who knows?

Another side note: how about the day for basketball in my former hometown of the Queen City of Cincinnati? Huggy takes K-State, Mick Cronin is hired away from Murray State (Cronin is a UC grad and Cincinnati native, and a former assistant to Rick Pitino at Louisville), and Andy Kennedy, who did an outstanding job at UC in less than stellar circumstances, takes the job at Ole Miss. I think it's a smart move all the way around. Andy Kennedy should get some coach of the year votes, though he's no Tennessee Pearl [IMG]

Tom, I read that about Alford's contract as well. I really think the longer this goes on, the less likely it is Alford.

I will be interested to watch how Huggins does at KState. I bet Cronin does a good job for Cincy. I was a little surprised at Kennedy getting the Ole Miss job as I thought Mike Davis would end up there.

Mike Davis is being mentioned at Murray State and at UAB. Also, Scott Edgar, a UT assistant, is being rumored to be Murray State's top choice.

One name I have been surprised to not see pop up in consideration for another big time job and that is Matt Doherty

    *cough* *cough* *spew* *spew*

I remember when he was at UNC and he said he felt like kicking the dog or that his wife had to use plasticware so he wouldn't hurt himself.

Don't you think maybe he learned some valueable lessons at UNC? You can't discount the fact that Roy Williams won a National Title with the kids that Doherty recruited.

I hope he learned some valuable lessons. I don't think you can discount that Williams is their current coach either.

I just want the best for the Hoosiers. Doherty's years at UNC were tough on that team. (My oldest was there then. ACH -- I still remember some of the earfulls I got!)

I just want them to get a good coach. I don't know much about lots of the coaches being considered. Doherty I remember though.

If ESPN is right and Sampson is the next coach, I think that is a great hire for IU. Someone completely off the radar and someone who is very respected around the country. Living in Big 12 country, I have always enjoyed watching his teams play.

Problem is, Kelvin Sampson is a good coach but he leaves a program under investigation at Oklahoma. Many of the allegations are against Sampson himself.

I guess the question now is "Who is OU's next coach?" [IMG]

The investigation of Sampson really concerns me. From what I have seen of Sampson as a coach, I have liked. But I do not want a program that breaks the rules. I hope he has learned his lesson and will do things the right way. No matter how many complaints people have had with Coach Knight, he never violated any NCAA rules in how he carried his program and he graduated his players.

You are right on all counts. Sampson is a great Xs and Os coach. He has always been on my list at UT for our openings. However, we don't want rulebreakers, either.
One of the most overlooked facts about Bobby Knight is his players' graduation rate and how he's had hardly a shred of scandal among his players and recruiting in his coaching career. You have to respect that.

As I have stated, the violations at Oklahoma concern me. However, some Indiana fans have went off the deep edge already creating a firekelvinsampson.com website before the guy has even had one practice.

I see the cause for concern, but perhaps they should give they guy a chance. Perhaps he learned his lesson about violating NCAA rules and won't do it again.
