Why are so many in the world predicting world will end in 2012?

Some really cool Mayans put a calendar on a rock with chisels. It was made about 400BC. It went from one corner of a square rock to the opposite corner. It included lunar eclipses. At the far corner of the rock the calendar ends in AD 2012. as we reckon time.

'The Mayan calendar ends in AD 2012' does NOT mean 'the world end in AD 2012'.

My Primrose Funeral Home calendar for 2007 ends on 30 April 2008. Does that mean that my world will end on 30 April 2008? DUH - don't think so.

Yeah, if we asked that Mayan now, he'd probably say, "well, that's the biggest rock we could find....and my arm got tired"

Well, it would be great if God had taken us home at the time we believed, but then many verses inspired to be written to strengthen the believer would have had no meaning. Such as:

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Date nuts. They are ok to eat but it's quite another thing to be one. Those who think they can predict the day are "date nuts." And, those who listen to the date nuts are just as nutty. Live today as if He were returning today and you will be ok for He just might.

There are many who continue to say that according to all of the worlds cultures, regardless of which, they all match in one thing. The world will end in 2012 or that something huge will happen on that date.

What do you guys make of this, there are many in today's Churches and most importantly more in the world believe this is the case. Whats this all about?

I must live a very sheltered life - I haven't heard of this one. I find it hard to believe that "all of the world's cultures" believe that the world will end in 2012. I suppose it is possible that some people from each of the world's cultures believe such a thing.

He will not come until the last of the elect are born and receive the Gospel. He is not willing that any of the elect would perish. If the elect are only those who believe, then He can never come.... because there are an extreemly large number of babies born every hour.

What Bible are you reading, RB? I have yet to see one that states God is not willing that any elect should perish. Every one I have states He is not willing that any should perish.

Peter is speaking to men who are already pure (v.1) encouraging them to remember the words of the prophets and the apostles (v.1,2). Causing them to realize there will be scoffers walking in their own lusts (v.3) and questioning the coming of the Lord (v.4). The are ignorant of the promise because of their own will (v.5) and not God's decree. Just as the earth suffered the judgment long ago by the flood (v.7), so ungodly men will suffer judgment in the future (v.7,8)

But, God is not willing that any should perish (v.9) but that all men come to repentance.

As reformed reminded you, context...

Who is perishing? Ungodly men? Who has already repented? Those who had pure minds... the Brethren. Who is God not willing should perish? The ungodly! God wants the ungodly to repent and come to Him. How many of the ungodly does He wish to repent? All of them! He is not willing that any of the ungodly perish but that all come to repentance.

Context, my friend, context.

Thank you reformedbeliever for reminding us to read 1 Peter 3:9 in context. It really brings light on who God wants to come to Him... whosoever.
