I guess as a result of this thread I had better run out and get me a gun and some stickers to put on my home and cars:laugh:

Yes, carrying a firearm could have prevented the whole thing. Its sad that its even the case. I know some people would never dream of owning or carrying a firearm because of potential dangers or maybe because they just have never been around them. Around here, everyone has one, everyone knows it, and crime rate is low.
Are people less well-armed next door in Louisiana? Crime rate is high there.

Is one thing to have arms in rural areas and quite another in the city where the potential for deadly mistakes is so much higher.

If you are not comfortable with it, then don't buy one. Just realize that when someone breaks in your home to do violence to you and your family, and you call 911 that by the time the police get there, you and your family will most likely be dead already. If you have a weapon with you, more than likely, the person who broke in your house will be dead.

Yes the crime rate is much much higher next door. We lived in New Orleans for 3 years before coming here, and you better believe we were armed. Even since the hurricane, the crime rate is back to an alltime high. It is difficult for an average citizen to legally carry a gun/pistol in that state. In my state, its quite easy.

You gonna sleep with a loaded gun under your pillow? What happens when the "burglar" happens to be your teenager sneaking home late at night?

ya know I have actually worried about that same thing. My DH sleeps with his 38 right beside the bed and when I go to bed after him, I have often worried he would mistake me for an intruder, lol. He wakes up kinda wild-eyed at times, lol. So if yall hear a bunch of noise late at night, its either that me and DH are having a shoot out or SBC cheated on his diet and ate some bean burritos.

Tragic accident that could have been avoided had the teenager not been so rebellious.

We had an outsider come in and try to rob a bank a few years back. He was held at gunpoint by 17 people until the police arrived.

Curtis, I am sorry I was not clear. I am just curious how if a person here was carrying a gun this situation would have been different. If someone grabs someone at gunpoint how are you going to have time to grab your gun and make any difference? Will it not end up in both people shooting, etc?

I can see how an attacker would be less likely to strike if they thing you might be armed.

I am not discounting what you and others are saying, I just have never fully understood the concept. I hope this was clearer, if not let me know.

Well, your second paragraph is a lot of it.

As to the first, I worked in a business for many years that took me to some questionable places. There were three robbery attempts made against me (four if you count the attempted snatch-and-grab), two with guns. None were successful. In one of them, I was in a DC suburb, but was carrying legally. In one of them, although I was outnumbered, they decided it wasn't worth it and they ran to find easier pickings. In the other, I held the perpetrator (a wanted criminal) until the police arrived.

Two of my co-workers were victims of car-jackings and they were both very anti-gun and thought they were more dangerous than anything else.

As an aside, it's usually a bad idea to attempt a snatch-and-grab from someone who is 6'9" and 300 pounds.

That makes two of us but I think I'll stick with just stickers. I never could hit the 25 or 50 meter target when I was in the military. I'd hate to shoot myself
