I noticed that I have no consistent writing style. Every time I write something, I write in a different style. I don't know if this is good or bad. It seems that, if I can write in different styles, I have an advantage, because I should be able to write in a variety of styles. But then, if I have no consistent writing style, where is my personality? Do I have a natural writing style, or have I just simply failed to develop one because I've been constantly trying to write in different styles, especially biblical ones, which I have clearly failed to do. I haven't even done a profitable direct imitation exercise except once.
You know what's stupid? In this age of history, schools teach that knowing the qualities of good prose, and simply following the writing process, produces good writing. In rhetoric, they used to teach imitation of style and rhetorical forms. It is my estimation that, a student could write in a variety of styles because they've absorbed a full repertoire of rhetorical elements from their imitation exercises.
They also taught invention, but I don't know if they taught anything about fiction. I know Aristotle did in Poetics, but I never read that. I never completed reading any book by Aristotle.
Is rhetoric sinful?
