Why do people make such a big deal about bible translation?

Personally there are translations to avoid, but most modern ones are sound NIV,ESV,KJV,NKJV,NASB. Even the New Living has sound theology. What baffles my mind why some here get so personal and attacking on this issue and why there has to be so many books on this debate. I have the KJVO Controversy and the Word of God in english. I did think about getting How to Choose a Translation for all it's worth but it's okay as I have one of his other books which has a chapter on this issue.

Why do people get so emotional in this issue but go as silent as a rabbit when it comes to evangelism and confronting the false teachers (Jude)?

There is a difference between reading books that help in the interpretation of scripture and those that are not worth the paper they are written on. I have noticed that those who have studied well also read good books to further their understanding. The books I once used and thought were good are no longer in use simply because I have more tools available to me. Since studying the languages I now use other helps written by those who are recognized as scholars in what they have written. Now I spend much more time reading books that help me to understand the background of a text or passage. Also because I have more tools available to me my discussions are limited to those who can discuss such matters. For example I cannot discuss the Greek text with someone who only knows English. An older pastor once told me that once I understand the first five books of the Bible the rest of scripture will be much easier. When I read the gospels I must understand the customs of the Jews and how they thought to understand what Jesus taught. For example if you understand that the background of Mt. 18:20 is found in discipleship in the context of Judaism during the time of Jesus then you will also understand what Jesus meant when he said in Jn 15:16. As you study discipleship in Judaism you will also learn what a disciple of a rabbi had to go through to become a rabbi and will understand what the response was in Jn 15:16. Those kind of things makes scripture lift off the page and give it life with feet and emotion. Imagine what those men must have thought when Jesus chose them.

I would say read the best books you can. Good books cost money but poor books are useless and are a waste of money. In the long run you get the best use out of good books with less money spent than you would on poor books.

Who are those against books?

I have seen the charge repeatedly on the BB, but I have never actually been introduced to these anti-book or anti-literacy folk. Are they real (in context, on the BB), or are they made up people who others use to illustrate a point?

The only one I have read speaking on the many illiterate is Evangelist####. He is either delusional or I am missing something here.

Most of my books are in the area of apologetics/evangelism and theology. I also have some commentaries and bible studies type books to get me into the word of God. Name some good books that you have that are valuable and others that are worthless please. Commentaries? Books on inerrancy or how we got the Bible?

This year I tossed about 16 books that I felt were worthless and one major reason was their view or use of scripture in the pages.

I also acknowledged that I may have missed something. If I have accused you of not reading the bible, then it would be a lie from me, not Hell. But I have not said that you don't read the Bible. I suggested that you spend more time in Scripture and take a break from those other books. I have called you out many times on your integrity...or lack thereof...and you simply ignore and move on. I do apologize for any "harsh" language, I was unaware I was using such language. But more to the point - am I right or wrong here? Can you list the many on the BB who are "against books" or is this fabricated nonsense? (just list five, Evangelist####, and that'll be enough to show I missed something)

No, think that many of us here would support the concept of having and reading other books such as Commentaries/Concordances/Introductions/Theologies, but that the ONLY source that we should be getting our doctrines and practicesfrom is the bible itself...

And usually the questions of which Bible to use comes due to someone advocating that only ONE particular version would be the word of God to use for today...

Where in this thread does JohnC spout a hellish lie accusing you of not reading the Bible? You said he did this falsely, and that it spawned in hell. Perhaps he edited a post that none but you were privy to? But if not, then you owe JonC a sincere apology. In addition, you have the responsibility to back up or quantify your charge that "lots" of members of this board are against books and say that books are useless because we have the Bible.
